pretty much every major bank has online trading for both us and canadian markets... also there are a lot of other online brokers who offer the same service... till now the cheapest one i have found ($11 a trade) that does not need $25k just to open an account is ameritrade canada... most bank commissions are arounf $30...

http://www.ameritrade.ca

let me know if anyone else comes across something cheaper, which has lower account opening minimum..

I have experience with two online trading accounts-CIBC Investor's Edge and BMO Investorline. The BMO is more expensive but gives access to advanced charting and research reports. In addition it has been adjusted as No. 1 discount broker in Canada.

In my view the major advantage with Bank brokerage account is the ease of cash transactions through your bank chequing account.

yeah, but if you trade frequently, any convinience of funds transfer hits hard on the commissions you pay... $60 total to buy and sell a security... if you trade frequently, then convinience of funds transfer is hugely offset by having lower commissions..

btw, there is also disnat direct, for $19.95/trade... minimum account opening balance is cdn$15,000...

ameritrade is still the cheapest one around i think, $10.99/trade with us$2000 minimum...
