Well, all I know is that home construction(tho not directly related to what you are doing) and related activities are doing well in Montreal and Canada. Apparently there is also a dearth of skilled construction help. Its totally out of my area of speciality but, I would hazard a guess that your bg/experience and skillset will be an advantage here. Your North American experience would be a plus too. Hopefully, you will find a good job to your liking right away. I am assuming you are young too so I dont think you will have much of a problem. If you do...its only a stepping stone. All the best!
Maybe someone who has more insight on the matter can add to my notes.

These Canadian corporates are may be more cautious.

Few days back, I was over hearing a conversation ... the subject was ... how he produced fake degree, certificates & employment letters to come here in this country. He definitely will prepare a Resume to reflect his so called qualifications & experience.

Now I must say, he went too far ... infact croosed all Borders.

But there may be some, who produce fake certificates or fake experience or may be something else too. Everything is possible back home (and these guys know it).

I mean, this could be one of the reasons they dont hire new immigrants. Ek machhali poore talab ko kharab karti hai ...

Friends, thank you for correcting me ...you are right ...i maybe having too rosy a picture of Canada in my mind ....

I really appreciate you all trying to make new to be immigrants aware of the ground realities there ... but even though situation is really bad there .... is the supply/demand ratio of jobs, school, housing, electricity worse than india?

with 8.8% unemployment rate in india total number of unemployed people is twice the population of canada!!...despite that we were still able to find a foothold and a job...so why cant we do so in canada?

You may say that our degrees are worth garbage ...but does that make our abilities garbage too ...not at all !!! ...otherwise they would not let us migrate...do not underestimate the indian education... we only need a break to prove our worth and it may take a long while to get that break...if one is more productive than others and sincerely hardworking then lesser people would discriminate us...btw there is discrimination everywhere just the degree of it varies from place to place ...even in india there is dicrimination based on state..language etc etc .. ..is there not ?

If i decide to move ( yes, if!... this has got me thinking) i do expect hardships...but i was taking it to be a 1-2 yr sacrifice to make a better future for family and myself... if after 2 yrs i fail to get any headway and still stay stuck in a minimum wage job then i'd think i really goofed up...but i dont want to chicken out now and then repent all my life that i did not tryout the oppertunity.

maybe i am still wrong..I'd appreciate your comments .

Mishtar_India,

You do bring up a good point here. The forecast for the initial years in Canada isn't sunny at all and the ground reality hardly rosy. But what about the ground reality in India?

Isn't it the same exact situation there too? Pick up a newspaper today anywhere in the world and you'll read about the blistering rate of progress in India. The job market is flourishing, FOREX reserves are through the roof and the economy has never been better. Even Paul Martin mentioned the Indian economy in his first speech and how Canada needs to compete. So imagine what kind of picture someone who has never been to India would coujure up.

But only we know the ground reality there. Unless you are one of the fortunate few with the money and the connections, life is very difficult there. For the majority living below the poverty line, there is hardly much hope. And statistically, if you're part of the middle-class, your chances of making it big aren't too good. Engineers and B.Sc.s are a dime a dozen, B.com's are everywhere. What are you chances of getting a well paying growth oriented job (without using connections) if you graduate with a B.Com? And this explains the fact that despite all the frustrations I've heard in the past 3 years form numerous people, I haven't met a SINGLE GUY who's gone back. That's not to say nobody has gone back to India, but the percentage is negligible.

The GOOD part about India is the proximity we have with our families and the support we get from them. We understand the systems, know the rules (or lack thereof) and are able to weave our way through daily life.

That is what hits you here first when you land. You're totally on your own (unless you have relatives here who're willing to help, that is a much much better situation to be in). Besides being in unchartered territory, you lack means of transporation, don't have enough finances and you have to look for employment despite these handicaps. At the same time you have to try to keep your spirits high because you'll meet a lot of people who'll tell you that there are no jobs in Canada for you and you should have stayed back in India. The fear of uncertainty stings clear all the time.

You need to have a lot of resolve to deal with all this, you're fighting yourself as much at first as you are the sorroundings. And that is what we're trying to convey here on Canadiandesi. I don't think the idea is to discourage anyone from coming here, the idea is to arm them for the war within that will ensue once they land. To help them hit the ground running.

Peronally, I think you're making the right decision to come here and have taken all this in the right spirit. I hope others do too.

Bluelobster is very right. I do not recall a single desi calling quits to canada and going back.

I frequently meet this gujju Shell employee whenever I go to buy Gas. So far he has been whining for last 2 yrs that he may pack up for India any moment(he's Engr and has to work as Shell cashier).........
Now what he did in last 3 yrs while working at Shell(n whining at the same time)..... he first got his mother here, then went to India, got married, n got his wife here........and now he's shopping around to buy a Dollar Shop as he is joining hands with his US cousin. I saw his this evening........n he's Still whining.........

So you see, everybody settles down sooner or later, Desis are smart enough to find their way out:cheers:

like your gas station attendant ...i am amazed to see many desis in US doing decent jobs whining and all the time . those who have recently recieved greencard or citizenship whine even more ( not all but many)...i am still baffled and am trying to understand this strange phenomenon !!..:D ...

why whine ...when faced with an adverse situation ...face it ...whether we face it with a smiling face or a frowning face ...the problem wont go away...so why whine?

Quite intelligent musings there in your post BlueLobster.
Indeed it is the initial part of settlement that is too harsh.
