I would like to know too. How's the traffic from Milton, Hamilton, and Burlington to Mississauga during rush hours?

Are there a good chunk of IT companies in Kitchener/Waterloo? How does it work out if work there and live in Guelph (~30kms commute/way). And, how's the real estate in Guelph like? From my research, there are still abundance of homes listed below $600k. Also, that the city is considered to be decent and safe. Can someone provide some further information?

Guelph is small little town within the Kitchener Waterloo belt, with a university and decent access to K-W area. If you are working in Mississauga, the commute from anywhere in K-W, Guelph is very challenging due to the congested 401. The Milton junction of 401 is prone to collisions on almost daily basis which results in 25-30 km backups often. If there is no incidents, the drive is not bad if you don't mind 1- 1.5 hr each way.

So if you can find a decent offer in K-W area, Guelph will be a good option.

Good luck.

Thanks Hiren. I live in Vancouver, but always keep my eyes and ears open should I find a better opportunity elsewhere, especially in GTA. Equally, I don't want to pay for the insane money for housing there as well as to spend much of my time in traffic so staying away from GTA. I would rather stick to the small town like Guelph and commute within the same periphery with a quality employment opportunities in IT, which currently Kitchener/Waterloo holds. With also University of Waterloo in close proximity for my kids, I think I should seriously give it a thought.

1. Hamilton - Is a ghetto area. Don't live there. Lot of crime & trashy Neighbourhoods.

2. Burlington - Nice area. Mostly White, but good area.

Burlington to West end of Mississauga and even up to the Centre of Mississauga ( Square One ) traffic is not bad during rush hour. In about 1 hr or less you will reach most places.

But going up to the East end of Mississauga , traffic will start as you start approaching Toronto.

3. Milton - To Mississauga is quite good. Not much traffic during rush hour.

4. Guelph is a very good & safe area. Guelph to Kitchner/Waterloo will be a very easy commute.

You can even easily reach West end of Mississauga in 45 mins to 1 hr from Guelph.

Real estate in Guelph is much cheaper than any area in GTA, especially Toronto & Mississauga.

After Black Berry went down lot of IT jobs in Kitchner/Waterloo have gone down a bit.

But Guelph, Waterloo, Kitchner has quite a few universities and colleges, so lot of students from GTA come there for schooling.

If you can get some IT related jobs in one of these institutions you are set for life. Good atmosphere and good salary.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are willing to take 407 - Which is a TOLL highway as opposed to 401, 403 etc, all the above commutes will be even faster and traffic fee. You will guaranteed do 100 + Km/hr on 407 Toll highway, even during rush hour.

From my research, I have found that majority of the companies in KW area are startups and not many established ones. This busted my bubble a bit as the Startups never appealed to me due to the sheer reason of their funding instability and micro-management. However, the good thing being with many companies around, it's relatively easier to find another job if you happen to lose one or need a change down the line.

My target is not to get stuck in the traffic for 4 hrs a day. Rather, to spend at most an hour in commute. Also, to live in a quiet and affordable neighborhood, which is currently a challenge to find either in GTA or Vancouver (well, I already own a home here).

At present, I live in one of the Vancouver burbs. but the daily commute is horrid (~3hrs/day) with transit. There is not much employment activity in Vancouver burbs alike GTA (Mississauga, KW, Brampton, etc.), which is impacting my quality of life and peace in this city with supposedly highest quality of life than anywhere else in the world. Yes, II ought to be very happy by virtue of living in one of the best places on earth (ashamedly, some of our vehicle license plates claim as such :)). It's a catch-22 situation I am in right now. Equally difficult is finding the remote job or the one that allows me a maximum work from home alternatives. I work in IT, by the way.

Houses in Brampton, Mississauga, Milton, Burlington, Oakville, Markham, etc. have already gone over the roof. The ones that are left (Guelph, Cambridge, KW, etc.) are pretty far from everything in GTA.

The hunt is still on....

:)
