I think in general you will be very friendly with goras and they will be also be very friendly with you, but you won't necessarily be friends. It will be a more superficial & shallow type of friendliness, not really anything deep & meaningful. At the end of the day, you can do without them and they can also without you.

Being friendly and actually being friends are 2 totally different things. So you will keep a safe distance from each other & the attitude will be, I am here to be friendly with you, but we are NOT necessarily friends.:D

Not much I belive, unless one is completely transformed culturally and mentally, but even after that it is very to find.

They may have few so called friends during college days - for common projects, partying, being a room-mat and others, but if you think about someone being a lifelong friend, a very few would have those.

Inter-racial marriages are a different story and worth another thread!

All my cousins born and raised here have a 100% desi friend circle. Doesn't matter if they went to a Med school in States. They completely confined themselves to the Desi crowd. When I asked them, surprisingly their response was similar to what we are discussing here - they simply couldn't relate to the different lifestyle, i.e. marriages, family bonding, music (yes, some of them do listen to the Bollywood), food (Masala Bar-be-que), etc. Even the ones that truly transformed themselves to the North American lifestyle have 100% desi friends.

I am reminded here of Lord Mountbatten who gave the following explanation for the division of the Indian subcontinent into India & Pakistan ...

'Despite living together for centuries , both communities have different religious and cultural values , eating & living habits and hence do not integrate fully '

Which I am sure is present of India today as well .... Where huge cultural dissimilarities exist , it is difficult to homogenize.

We are diverting this discussion to goras but what about non desi non goras ... Chinese , Somalians , Middle Easterners ?? Its the same story ...

The same story there as well. In my office, South Indians have lunch and mingle among themselves - nothing to do with Northies (and vice-a-versa). We, North Indians have a company with Pakistanis than the Southerners, due to the language, food, and cultural similarities.

That unique situation is your lack of understanding or ability towards it :D

Cultural similarities are relative ...

In an alien land , even enemies would appear to be friends due to similar culture ...

Just an observation , nothing else :D

Dude ,

That is your convoluted thinking :D

Go to a forlorn country where you don't have any of your own country people ... say some forlorn Russian or Chinese city ...

And there imagine that among your colleagues , the only person you find from the sub continent is a man from Pakistan ...... and then I bet you will eat your own words ....

Been there , done that .... When I was in Qatar , there used to be this Paki colleague and we used to hang out together .... very well ... despite the fact that he was a Muslim , his cultural similarity to Arabs was much less v/s me....

But forget it , you would not be able to understand it .. Save what you have :D
