Interesting topic. Having over 30 family friends over the last 15 years, I was considering myself very social but all of them are desi. I think the main barriers for me are food habits (being vegetarian) and culture. I was not born and brought up here so find it difficult to align with. I have few friendly office colleagues but can’t count them as friend. Another interesting realization – I never felt necessity to have a non-desi friend. Period.

Having a GORA friend is a status symbol back home.

So even if you don't have any GORA friends, take photos with some random Goras walking down the street and tell people back home, they are your Gora friends. This will impress them a lot.

The GORA chamdi complex has still NOT gone away in India. That's why " Fair & Lovely " cream has very good sales in India. " Fair & Handsome " is also doing very well thesedays, as guys are getting into this too.

All matrimonial ads will say the girl is " FAIR ", but usually she is very dark like " Dambar " (Tar) or like
" Koyla " ( Coal )..sad but true :(

Shoveling is for poor people. A rich woman like you should have a SNOW BLOWER. Best time to buy them is in Summer, lot of clearance sales :), its too late for that though.

An electric Snow Thrower is more than enough for Toronto winters, so you don't even need a full fledged gas Snow blower.

Fair skin is coveted in India, but not pale white colour. Pale skin was, and still is, considered mleccha.

Having come from distant lands, at least out of curiosity one should try to make friends with Canadian born folks and get to know the culture. Toronto being an international city, one can get access to a smorgasboard of cultures from across the globe. Definitely an advantage, at least professionally.

Good point, specially when you play a client facing role in your profession.

Since I am a Christian, I have tried this at Church (a point in which we can go one step ahead of other religions).

It will not work out. They donot like our mentality and we donot like theirs.

We can only be just touch and go friends. Their culture will not suit ours unless we were filthy rich in India.

Just as an example, Canadians like to drink, speak hi fi, exhibit love for the opposite sex and feel very offended if ask them any personal questions. So it will not work out.

At my office, they got irritated very easily. Though I tried to be a lot friendly to the ladies, they were not that much interested in reciprocating it. So I left it.

However in IT, the roles get reversed. Desi's are like Gora's and Gora's are like Desi's. Again the same thing. They are ok at work but not personally outside of work.

It may be your thinking AT but I don’t buy it. I would like to post a picture of my marriage anniversary event on Facebook with over 30 family friends and all of them are Desi. I am proud of what I am right now.
