Dear Friends,

I am in a bit of confusion as i am not clear what subjects my son (who is in high school, grade 9) should be taking if he has to go into engineering at college / uni level. He is in Academics now. There is an applied group also probably meant for students who want to take commerce and arts later. There is another group running in parallel which is called IB group. They are considered as the best students who get prepared for the university (that is what i have heard). Then i talked to school asking that my son should be placed in IB. They said since he started schooling in Canada from grade 9, so her cant be put in there. However if someone does atleast grades 7 and 8 in Canada, he has a chance to get a place in IB. Please do educate me on this and suggest that what should be my sons subjects, groups and methodology to get himself prepared for engineering admission after grade 12. Lastly, there are colleges and universities both giving engineering degrees. So should he be targeting a college or university, or best students go to unis and rest go to college. Thanks

College will give you a DIPLOMA and not a degree. Usually the program will be for 3 yrs, not 4 . College is generally more hands on and practical.

University will usually give you DEGREE and not diploma. Its generally more theorotical and less hands on and practical. Usually a 4 yr program. Generally more tough to grt in and also pass.

Some college graduates actually get entry level jobs faster than University graduates as their course is more practical. But they get stuck, while University graduates will move up faster i the later stages of your career, especially if they want to go into management and stuff like that. Or if they want to do Masters and further post graduate education like MS , MBA etc.

You came to the right place, and you always have been posting here with darn good questions..

I will touch the subject matter at a cursery level. Any one taking, Maths, Physics and Chemistry normally can aim towards an Engineering or a Science course at the University level. Now you already know that the College Level only gets you a DIPLOMA. So, shoot for the next highest level. Even in the Senior Elementary Level there in Every School there are Vocational Guidance Councillors who will help you decide what courses to take and how many credits they need to complete and also what is the minimum level of achievement is required to enable an entry and a few get AUTOMATIC Entry into many a University and some with Schlorship if they can maintain those high levels throughout.

Currently, those who want to take up Engineering can also get an hands on work shop training right at the school and take up a work shop course to supplement and if get the top marks will get a certificate of achievement to enable a Diploma later on while doing the Engineering Degree Course. Please research this for me and revert here.

Some University Degrees have a good standing. The Universities to aim for are Toronto and Ryerson. You can go to the library and check with the Librarian for the McLeans´Magazine Yearly edition of their publication to see which one got placed as the TOP University in any subject and overall and how they got there and who placed them there.

Good Luck.

Fh.

No Desi respects a diploma these days (community college). Most desi's that I know take Engineering programs in reputed universities. They donot take no name degree programs but known ones like Computer science, Mechanical, Robotics, Nuclear engineering etc.. Such programs are still very much in demand in Canada.

Gora's take courses that interest them like reflexiology, anthrophometry, anthropology etc.. We desi's take courses that are highly in demand and start liking them because we see a good life after 4 or 5 years of hardwork.

Please note that OSAP loans will be available to your children after 12 months of stay. So make the best use of it. I would not suggest community college unless you know a program which gives like 100 % job guarentee program.

All the very best to your children.

Your kids can also take OSAP and take Canadian citizenship and then tun away to another country like US or Middle East from where you come. No one will catch them.

They can also declare bankruptcy if they want, although its a bit harder for a student to do that and they can avoid the OSAP loan and its forgiven. Not as easy as before, but still doable :)

I know a brokeass guy who took full education over here and big time student loan on OSAP and then ran away without paying to Dubai, where he got a good job, never to come back again :)
