And which internet connection?

Very good area. Taxi fare will be ONLY $ 35 - $ 40 from Pearson Airport.

The area is in Toronto, but almost on the border of Mississauga & Toronto, so access to BOTH cities is easy.

1. Wind Mobile ( Is The Cheapest ), but their mobile data plan and network is a bit spotty in some areas, as its a NEW company. They have UNLIMITED calling as long as you are in WIND zone and Not WIND away zone.

2. Fido , 3. Koodo are very good and relatively cheap.

Avoid Rogers, Bell and Telus at all cost :(

------------------------------
Internet connection third party guys like Teksavvy , Distributel are good and cheap and have more bandwidth ( cap ).

Bell, Rogers etc are more expensive and bandwidth is less and they charge you an arm and leg if you exceed the bandwidth ( overage charges )

You need not have a landline to get internet. What you can get is a DRY loop line ( nominal charges for that ) + Internet through that line :)

Most people here have got rid of their landlines. They just have mobiles with data plans on them. And a DRY loop home internet if they want internet at home.
---------------------------
Calling India is as cheap as 1.9 cents/minute ..depending on the plan and company.

Here your local calling company and Long distance company need not be the same. You can have your mobile or landline with one company, and Long Distance -LD ,with some other cheaper company like G3 Telecomm.

You just have to dial a certain Access number before you make the LD call to India, so the bill goes to your LD company and NOT your local company, so LD call will be cheaper.

----------------
Public Libraries have free internet, so get a Free public library card. Lot of other free Wi-Fi spots in Starbucks, McDonalds, Some sub way stops, some bus terminals etc.

------------------------

Get TTC tokens for you and child tickets for your son initially. Cash fare is expensive ..exact change is required, bus driver doesn't give you change. You put change or tokens or tkts in the fare box, when you climb into the bus. No bus conductor, over here ..he he. You pull a string or press a button, when you want to get off and push the door for it to open.

If you have a pass you just show it to the driver.

Monthly pass starts from the first of the month, so might NOT be worth it for your husband in Sep., as Sep has already started.

Always ask for a TRANSFER when you board a bus after paying fare, if you are planning to take a connecting bus later on or sub way later on. This way you won't have to pay another fare again :)

Study TTC extensively before coming here, bus routes, subway etc. Fares, how to travel , Transfers , Tokens etc. Distances are huge over here, TTC is going to be your friend. Public transit will be very confusing for you for the fisrt 2 weeks or so, but you will get a hang of it quickly. Subway is very easy to travel, its just the TTC buses, you might find confusing initially :(

Don't get into the car nonsense for the first year or so. winter driving is hard and dangerous. .lot of accidents:(

Getting a Drivers License is also a nightmare over here, long and tedious process. Also car insurance is ridiculously expensive for new driver and new immigrant :( . G1, G2, G too much crap :cuss:

Driving school, Failing you in your driving test , speeding tkts, traffic tkts, tow truck, parking tkts, car insurance etc are ALL very good businesses over here  . Lot of desi driving instructors to cheat you  :cuss: :cuss:

You are most probably at StayInn on Evans Avenue. You will need to take 15 Evans TTC bus, it will take you to Royal York sub way station ( one station after Islington ).

Doesn't matter which sub way station you go to they are ALL the same. Its not distance based fare. So if you travel 1 station or 50 its the same :).

As long as you DON'T come out of the sub way station its fine, even if you miss your stop, you can always get down legally and go on the other side and take the train in the opposite direction.

15 Evans Bus , details below :)

https://www.ttc.ca/Routes/15/RouteDescription.jsp?tabName=map

Make sure you take the right bus, one goes East and the other West. It starts from Royal York subway station and goes to Sherway garden ( big shopping mall there )

You get TTC tokens and tkts at lot of authorized sellers ( mostly convenience stores ), so you need not go to subway station to get them. See TTC website for details of closest TTC vendors near your address. See link below :

Kudos to AT for providing so much information.

I would like to suggest look up the ongoing deals section in RFD and check for the current Rogers internet and cable TV promotion. At this time Rogers is offering packages much better than teksavvy and other distributors. Also in the recent past services of teksavvy have taken a serious hit.

If you are ordering internet from Rogers, you don't need home phone or dry loop, it is via cable.

See How much your husband will get in hand AFTER all the deductions, and budget accordingly :)

http://canadiandesi.com/read.php?TID=36549

The 3 of you will need atleast $ 2,000 / month to live a decent life .

This includes :

1.Rent . ( Generally 1 BR or basement apartment ). NO condo rental, apartment rental only.

2.Basic Groceries (mostly home cooking, almost NO outside eating )

3. Public Transport ( No car ). Mostly monthly pass for 1 person. The other's can use occassional tkts and tokens. The TTC pass is legally transferrable, so if one is NOT using it, the other person can.

4. Some basic utiliities like landline Phone, Internet, Cable, Mobile. Mostly their lowest & cheapest plan.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if his GROSS is $ 70,000 , he might get ONLY $ 48,000 in hand NET :(. So plan accordingly :)

The above are monthly recurring expenses, each & every month.

They don't include the first ONE time expenses in settling down initially like buying Furniture, Sofa, Bed , Mattress, Curtains,TV, Computer, Desk, Pots,Pans,Dining Table, Chairs etc :(. This is brand new & decent stuff. Not some used & second hand stuff, I am talking about.

This ONE time expense can easily be between $ 5,000 - $ 10,000 or even more :(, depending where you shop & what type of household goods you go for . So plan for that too :)

we are bringing some basic pots pans and other basic things along with us.
Rest furniture, rent and internet connection , phone will be the expense.
