Drishyam - Papanasam - Drishyam

Originally I thought of hijacking B_P's 'Baahubali' thread but then thought better of starting this one :

I have heard of this original Mohanlal flick 'Drishyam' then adapted to Kamal Hassan's Papanaasam and then to Bollywood's 'Drishyam' starring Ajay Devgn making huge waves recently ....

Want to watch this out - I admire both Kamal Hassan and Mohanlal ... Wonder which movie is better ? - KH's or ML's and is either of them dubbed in Hindi ?

Kamal Hassan has lost his mojo since the last two decades. Clearly, he is not the Renaissance man that he thinks he is. Should have stuck to his specialisation, i.e., acting in off-beat films.

Ever since he has had his fingers in multiple aspects of movie making (including directing, production, acting, editing, singing etc), he has turned out one dud after another. I used to like his movies when I was younger, now he comes off as highly over-rated.

Mohanlal is a natural actor. Watch the original Malayalam version, I heard it is the best of the lot.

I heard both have a different flavor. Personally, I would prefer Mohanlal. His version is a bit mellowed than the one with Kamal. Should watch both to better distinguish.

I am happy, we have some quality alternate cinema than the one with bunch of jokers they call it Bollywood.

Good movies are made everywhere and at all times though in less quantity ...recently I watched 2 of them - Dum Laga ke Haisha and Lootera .. well made and meaningful ones ... PK was also not bad.

BTW Drishyam is having a remake in Hindi too - with Ajay Devgn .. Though I would love to watch the Mohanlal one .. I have seen Mohanlal only in 2 Bollywood movies - a small role in 'Company' and if I recall correctly 'Sajaye Kaala Pani ' ... He sure impressed.

Fido, you may be right, but I believe Bollywood has much larger share of mindless crap that it churns out with mindless and stupid actors. These small movies that you mentioned made so less money, and also couldn't even recover their finances, cases in point Ankhon Dekhi, which was an excellent movie made with the budget of 3 crores the amount of which couldn't be recovered by the Producers. I am sure the same fate was achieved by Dum Laga ke, regardless of how great the story line was.

Ever wonder why even though Bollywood doesn't have a dearth of good actors (Naseer, Anu, Paresh, Irrfan, Kher, Om Puri), they can't write a single God Damn script that does justice both to the talent and the box office?

I don't have any faith in the mainstream Bollywood. A sporadic off-beat rush of movies don't do any justice to the already found/nurtured talent, on the other hand.

People are simply not interested in watching 'Aankhon Dekhi' or 'Dum Laga ke' en mass in theatres. A sorry state after glorious late 60s.

It was not like that FP even in 60s or 70s ... And that's true for each part of the world ..Not every movie is a Drishyam or Ardh Satya or Ankhon Dekhi ( which is the next on my list)

Most of the movies (including Hollywood) are entertainment movies and they do good business.... Meaningful cinema has always been less ... They are 2 different segments and dictated by the society they cater too.... An average cinegoer in India looks for entertainment after a hard day's work. :)

A few good Bollywood movies I have watched in recent times ( and yes they are being produced - if they are not box office hits ... well that is not their mistake ) ...But we can't say they are not being made.

Jolly LLB
Tanu Weds Manu ( and returns)
Vicky Donor
Rocket Singh
Wake up Sid
PK
Dum Laga ke Haisha
Lootera
Barfi
Shanghai
Kahani
My name is Khan

And then there are the box office block busters

Dhoom 3
Happy New Year
Dabangg & Dabangg2
Krrish 1 & 2 & 3

and the like ...

I have watched Drishyam (malayalam) and Papanasam (Tamil). I liked the Malyalam version. Mohanlal is better and also Meena is better than Gowthami for sure.
