Just recently went to a famous eye specilist in Cochin.
Consultation charge - Rs 200
Eye glasses (tinted) - Rs. 2000 (Good quality). However it can be got for as low as Rs 1200. Branded glass frames + lenses start ar Rs 5000.
Why I am posting is because, if you have got to do dental work , opthamology etc.. just do it in India when you come here, unless you are going to take everything from your extended health insurance.

Try googgles4u and clearly contacts for online glasses ... Have ordered a pair of single vision for $10/- and it was not bad.... Though I generally pick up a couple of pairs when in India .. glasses are cheap in India , however the branded ones there also are not cheap ... apparently a new segment of high value eye wear has come up there in recent times .

Price of glasses/lenses vary greatly by power and thickness and material of the lens (regular, high-index, glass, plastic, etc.). All these promos by stores work only if lens' power is low and buying regular lenses.

We have $250 for each of us (insurance) and when we went to few in etobicoke, they said 50 for eye check up and 280-350 for branded frame and lenses. 
When we went to Vision, we were shocked to see price diff. One of our neighbour used to work there few months back. She gv us referral.
