Thank you FH. I will surely look at the links that you have provided and we will do our research.

Murali, unfortunately, we are coming in loaded with that kind of money. So we will just have to rent out for now.

Thanks for the idea though.

OK. New Immigrant. Got your point.
I have PM'ed you my phone number.

For location, your husband is likely to get a job DOwntown and you in Missisaauga.

So a location like Islington station (Mabelle house) or along the subway line (Dundas Street W station) may be good.
Your son is just 5,5 years old. His school is from 8 am to 1 pm or so. Canadian jobs are from 8-4 or 9-5. So daycare is costly for your son. So you may be able to only part time jobs or your son should be in local daycare which can cost $ 400 to $ 800 a month.

Try viisting low cost stores like food basics / no frill / walmart for your food needs.

Adam, FH, Fido, HW 36, SS, BL, HC, Dimple are all good members of CD who are currently in Canada and can help you also (and even better than me). They will respond shortly, as soon as they come to their office for the day.

My few cents…….

Housing, schooling, transportation are minor things and they will be sorted out as you go so don’t worry too much about them. The most important thing is to know what you want to do in long term. Where you want to be in next 5/10 years and what inputs required by you to achieve those goals. Your next one year’s actions/decisions/choices will decide the future of your family.

You need good employable skills, dedication and some luck to be successful. Skills you can learn and polish and it is under your control. Dedication will come to you if you desire and according to the circumstances. Luck – you can only wish and it is beyond your control.

When I landed, spent around a month to evaluate myself, job market, available careers, and their future prospects, determine my short term and long term goals. Don’t act in anxiety or in haste. Think critically. You already have required adventurism by showing the willingness to land and settle far lands so keep yourself open to all options and be ready to re-locate wherever your long term goals can be fulfilled.

Now something more specific. Your husband can try in sales directly. Approach and talk to the managers of the organizations/stores to see if there is any opening. Car sales is an area which is very notorious for lies as well as for money but it needs a license which is an easy thing to get. You can get an office job through the temporary employment agencies so be ready to meet those head hunters personally. Don’t forget to take help from “New Immigrants Settlement Agencies’ as they are professionals and can guide you well. These agencies are funded by govt. and their services are free.

Finally some small things. Try to find out accommodation, information, sources and ‘How to do’ by yourself but if you stuck, ask us on CD. For example, if you tried and not able to arrange the accommodation and your travel plan finalized and you know that you have no place to go once you arrive at Pearson, contact me and I will open my guest room – may have to organize it a little bit. I had faced the same situation a long time back and don’t want others to be in the same.

Good luck.

I second Delhite.
Long term goals and short terms goals are highly essential in Canada (I failed due to non setting of goals). Always hold on to your money. Money is onething that gets easily spent in Canada.

Again, I am not sure what your skills are. Unless I or other CD's have a full understanding of your skills, we will not be able to help you on if you can get a job with your existing skills or if you should change your line.

For example, for your husband, he will easily get a job in retail which is selling shoes. He will have to stand in some store and act as a salesman. It will pay him min. wage only (say $ 10.50 an hour or whatever the min. wage is in Ontario). he has to get some Canadian experience and some Canadian course certificate and then try to get a job at the HQ of the shoe company.

For you, you can find work as a administration personnel in a logistics company or at the airport. Many logistics companies at in Mississauga, brampton or Vaughn (a little bit far from Toronto). With your sone being 5.5 years old, it will be a task to manage and that too if without a car. Not being negetive but only being realistic.

Are you planning on buying a car (with or without a job). A good car will cost $ 4000 plus $ 300 monthly on insurance. Gas is cheap. Getting a license in Canada is a task by itself.

Dear Delhite thank you for the warm welcome and your hospitality. Iam inseed overwhelmed. Yes what you say is absolutely right. It really helps when you see sone light in a dark tunnel. I understand that all of you at one gone through where we are todAy and CD is such a wonderful platform to exchange ideas. Like you said Car sales is something my husband is very good at while he does the same for a secondry income in Dubai as well. Will surely look into it.

Thankyou

I would say, for now just look for temoporary accomodation.. which is not too far from Toronto.
In summer you can travel easily.. and 4-5 month down the line you ll have better understanding about the area and which location suits you more and you can decide better where to stay and all.

If I were you then initial few months I would focus more on getting a decent job in my area of expertise.

I think buying a car or not would depend on job type and area. If we could first get our license, get to know the city and settle down in an area of our long term choice after about a year we would invest in a car. We want to hold on to every penny brought as savings. In abt 6 months or one year if we manage to settle into permanent jobs we will think of a car.

Is there any recruiter in the CD house who can alter resumes? Also does it help to start applying for jobs before physically being there
