Any other Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, or Regional quality movies that you guys can recommend? Not the over the top action ones, please.

Malayalam and Tamil industries have better off-beat, non-commercial movies.

Thanks guys.

EF, that's true. This is what I observed as well by reading various Movies' reviews of Regional cinema, especially Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. I am now just looking to broaden my perspective and choices by watching anything that's not purely Hindi, which has now becoming too repetitive and utter crap'ish.

I don't see any hope for Bollywood, except the movies by Vishal Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap that I continue to watch with intense interest.

Can we update this thread with the interesting and offbeat movies, regardless of the genre, language, and region?

Thanks TK. As I don't understand anything other than Punjabi, Hindi, and English, I plan to watch with subtitles. I'd still keep it in my list.

I am familiar with Telugu Film Industry(TFI), and watch it mainly to keep track of pop-culture and pass some time. Otherwise, I am content watching old Telugu films from the 40's/50's/60's.

Same with bollywood. One can't go wrong with Guru Dutt, Balraj Sahni, Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, etc. Heck even Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor(hey, at least the songs were good).

TFI is mostly a commercial enterprise driven by formulaic tastes of the audience. In fact, it is for this reason that it has found traction as an alternative among the younger, internet-savvy crowd from other parts of India.

Desi tastes are predominantly formulaic. Not being judgmental here, as I myself watch these kind of movies in general. Sorry, but I can't stand artsy-fartsy movies, except watch an occasional movie to offset the excess masala in my system after watching "Tollywood" heroes defy the laws of physics. The only changes in TFI from 80's and 90's are that heroes nowadays need not wear mustaches, there's more entertainment, better choreography and better production values. Everything else is the same old, same old-- tapori-hero-worship dramas spruced by unrelated comedy sketches, glamourous heroines imported from north & from Kerala. Don’t know if it will go down well with you.

I watched one movie by Anurag Kashyap. I think the movie revolves around the protogonist's daughter getting kidnapped. This movie was pure garbage. The director seems to be a misanthrope extraordinaire. All the characters in the movie are pure scumbags(not just flawed) to varying degrees. No wonder the French certified it(at Cannes). Lol!

I cringe to think these guys represent the emerging new-wave of Indian cinema. Life does imitate art, and these kind of movies are one among several reasons for current nihilism in western mass media(who had their new-wave cinema in earlier decades). This trend may be the reason for an escapist, cheesy Tollywood gaining traction among newer viewers outside the state.

Will watch more movies from these directors and maybe form a better, more informed opinion. Sorry, if I am being too harsh on the two directors.

Well, I have to clutch at straws for pulling off-beat telugu movies from youtube, but as far as routine movies are concerned, there are plenty. Here's a sampler from recent hits.

Thanks EF. I will have a look.

I am not a hardcore Artsy movies fan. Just for the ones that are bit different (not the cliche, but in truest sense). Couple of them I immensely liked in the recent years are:

Dum laga ke haisha
Khosla Ka Ghosla
Bheja Fry
Queen
Manorama - Six feet under
Dev D
Dhoop
Gangs of Wasseypur (1,2)
Udaan
O My God
Vicky Donor
Paheli
Kahani
Talash
Baby, etc.
Tanu Weds Manu
Piku
Omkara
Haider

Baahubali (Telugu version). Another upcoming, big budget southie film. A hindi dubbed version will also be released. Let's see how it turns out. I saw the trailer, looks entertaining.

Shankar's "I"(Tamil movie) was a huge commercial hit. This movie may also gross similar numbers.

Just heard about 'Kaaka Muttai (Crow Egg)'. All the good reviews.

The thing about the regional cinema is it's too difficult to get your hands on. If at all it's on the Internet, the print is so crap that it takes away the fun and leaves a bad taste.

Is there any legit website that releases these movies legally in HD prints? I don't mind paying for an excellent movie, which I couldn't find elsewhere.

There used to be a site, called 'PassionforCinema', which was brought down. It used to list and discuss the real 'Hatkey' movies. Any other such sites, if anyone knows of?
