Try CD classified or Kijiji.com.

Down town is a dirty , drug addicted place and you will get lousy accomodation only.
But your college is near a subway line and so it might be better if you move out (near a subway) like jane / islington / old mill / Dundas etc.. where accomodation / food is cheaper.
It all depends. Some like to be near the campus to enjoy campus life. So decide what you want.

Get a map of Toronto and compare each address of accomodation with TTC bus number/ Subway distance.

My option would be walk to subway and go to George brown. It is so much better for you that way.

My advice: don't get on long term rental contract right way - Wait for couple of week.

find short term rental even if its lil expensive - Try to find sharing accommodation with other student - look up on facebook - most of the student now has active facebook account - find temporary place then once u are familier with area it will be easier for you to find suitable place.

good luck - one advice - u will be coming to new place with high hope and dreams... just friendly advice: Canada is not fun as everyone think so KEEP CALM AND GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE

If you had given the campus that you will be attending and studying at, things would have made a difference in my search. But you can get by with this.

DO NOT PAY FOR ANY ACCOMMODATION TILL YOU GET TO SEE IT IN PERSON.
Also check your calendar and see the months you are off, as you will only study for
the 10 months of the year. A year's lease is O.K. if you are staying there 12
months of the year. Some landlords will reduce the rents too.

PASS.:
You can take advantage of the College’s discounted 12-month Metropass to save $192 a year.

You can also search for mostly basement apartments on KIJIJI.ca & CRAIGSLIST.ca . Kijiji is more popular in Canada. But beware there are some rental scams also out there on KIJIJI etc , where people take your money & run .

Happywoman36 has disappeared from Canadian Desi , Private Message her if you want , she can find accomodation for you , in one of her properties ..she is a multi milionaire ..he he :)

Search for her posts on CD & then PM her :)

Yeah ..the only advantage he can walk to his college if he gets accomodation close by . So he can save & his friends can save $ 140/month in TTC pass per head ..you can maybe put that savings towards the rent & grocery cost.

If he lives far in the west end , east end or even north end , he will have to shell out that money ..if its on a subway line its OK ..but if he has to take a Subway ( Metro ) + Bus ( to get to the Metro ) ..he can easily spend 1 hr per day each way in commute , so 2 hrs per day .

The only advantage of downtown is every thing is walking distance : movies , restaurants , grocery stores, bars , clubs , water front , sight seeing etc ..so you don't need a car or bus or train.

Also downtown is more lively ..full of street festivals, events, musicians, hockey/baseball/basketball games ..things are more busy & full of life ..lot of hustle & bustle. Things can get boring & dull elsewhere .

But yeah it will be more expensive & certain areas will be drug infested & have crime. But usually this stuff starts at night ..so if you are home by a certain time & avaoid certain areas you will be just fine.

Adam,
Agree with your points.
When we were in college, our main aim was having fun.
Living in Down town meant that you have access to all the party scene and you can walk home to sleep.
Unfortunately the entire U of T area (down town) is messy and fully occupied by the Chinese and the living conditions are very bad.
One would have to move atleast ar 3 km of radius to find a decent place to stay but that will come with teh additional TTC bill for a month.

Let the OP decide.
