Thank you Dimple2001 for providing great insight. She has offer from Purdue too, however since she wants to study BS Environmental Science the Purdue is low (51-100) in ranking . Purdue is highly ranked for Engineering though. Michigan course is ranked 10 . Berkley is 1.

What is your advise overall , should be US or Canada ? if we ignore the $ factor.

I would treat University rankings cautiously. A number of times, there are obscure factors included which would not make any sense or difference. If you are looking for a brand name behind the degree, I would go for Purdue, U of M or Berkeley. I don't know much about UBC or Toronto, but I have great impressions about Universities such as Concordia and U of Alberta.

Anyway, I would treat both Cdn and US Universities on the same level, and if $ is not a factor, consider the reputation of the University rather than the ranking.

The other way to look at it is the employability of the degree. I am familiar with Environmental Engr, but not Environmental Sciences. If the field carries limited career opportunities, a degree with a reputed University might boost things a bit.

I've visited both Purdue and U of M and they are student friendly campuses. U of M of course is part of metropolitan Detroit with access to the big city things while maintaining the quaintness of the college town. Ann Arbor is a technical hub and is youngster friendly. Same with Purdue in Lafayette - college town with driving access to a major city - Indianapolis.

Fair Disclosure - I have a bias toward U of M. In my opinion, a great University :)

I was speaking with an Intern in my office and was told that he selected University of Waterloo mainly due to the co-op opportunities. He is from California and said that US doesnt has co-op system as part of their curriculum. Here in Canada, its a requirement on some streams to do co-op every year, and for some streams its in the 4th year. What do you guys think about that ? Does co-op play a big role ?

Co-op and internship are loosely interchanged with each other in the use of terminology. Conceptually, they are both one and the same. What the intern probably is referring to is the mandatory credit hours required in the form of co-op in order to graduate. If that is the case, not all US Universities have that requirement, although a few do.

Whether it is mandatory or not, it is highly beneficial to work as an intern or co-op, at least in the last 2 years of the 4 year program. For one, the student gets real life industry experience, will be able to provide credible references, earn the so called Cdn experience (if in Canada), grow a professional network at a very young age, and develop a sense of industry trends and preferences.

From a soft skill perspective, a fresh graduate with prior internship/co-op experience tends to demonstrate an improved communication and interpersonal skills, in addition to self-confidence.

Not sure what is great in Univ. of Waterloo. IMO it is a hyped university. It is just a block of town. There is a circular road and the dept's are around it.
May be the professors are good but it lacks big time in off campus jobs and a vibrant nightlife. Waterloo downtown is full of drug addicts. Of course there are some good pockets where there are bars and it is crowded during weekends.
Hope Adam / FH can give an answer to it.

To the OP:
May be I am biased but my preference is for good US universities which are located in big cities like IIT (chicago).

You will be surprised TK if you knew that Google & Facebook come to U of W for campus recruitment.

For FB this is the only 3rd Univ it comes to after MIT & Stanford and the only one out of US and yes they do offer staring salaries of USD 90K + .
