Hi All,
We're (my wife & I) traveling to Halifax on 3rd March.
1. I'm speaking to some real estate agencies for 1 Bedroom or Studio Apartments in the downtown area. Is 900-1000 CAD a correct rent amount in the Downtown area? Any leads will be helpful.
None of the apartments come with utensils, beds, internet or TV.
2. Should we carry utensils along with us from India or is it better to buy locally? If we should buy locally where to buy from to get a good deal in the Downtown area.
3. Where to buy beds & mattresses from?
4. Are there any Wifi hotspots in Downtown area? How expensive is internet? Where to buy from?
5. What about mobile phone connection? What plan and from where to buy? Will need to make both local and ISD calls. Is it cheaper to use Viber or Skype?
6. How expensive is a TV? How expensive is cable? Where to buy from?
7. Will Indian electrical or electronics items work in Canada?
Thanks for helping.

1) Depending upon how long you are staying there in Halifax and how close a location to work or where you want, the rents will be matched by the renters. $800 for 1BRHDRK, looks O.K. The high end ones might call for 1000CAD, if they are posh.

2) Halifax is buried today under a 20 foot of snow bank. It will be about 1st of MAY, before they will see day light. Carry a lot of warm clothes and use as many layers as you are comfortable with to wear. Buy a Pot or a Pan from any Dollar Store Location and discard the same same when you leave HFX.

3) When you ask this question, it looks as if you will be there for a very long period. If it is a short term, Buy an inflatable BED from Canadian Tyre for $50. It is foldable and they are really comfortable too.

3a) Sheets and towels from Giant Tiger, buy the expensive ones, PERCALE link..: https://www.google.ca/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=KMviVO_4CKrE8gfVt4DADA&gws_rd=ssl#q=halifax+ns+canada%2C+locations+of+giant+tiger

4) Generally Free WIFIes are only at the libraries and few COFFEE SHOPS such as Williams', Timmies and a lot of others. Please check the HFX Libraries. (Google) where ever you will be living close to....

5) http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/MonthlyPlans/Group12 , This is just one such service. They are O.K. Check others too.

6) TV, smart ones, 32" across diagonal, are $300 plus tax, other HD 1080 P LED are 240 plus tax, for 32". If you are not fussy, take unlimited Internet for $40 and get a ROKU OR Jadoo3, All set for life. JADOO $240, ROKU, About 100.

7) They work with all kind of step up TRANSFORMERS., if brought from India. Give them away to some one who will appreciate and thank you. All those electrical utility items, all of them, will not cost you more than a hundred.

Any more questions, please be EXPLICIT. It takes a few extra minutes to read both your minds, so, give us the break.

Wonder why you selected downtown area for living?
Where will be your workplace , Halifax ? Bedford ? or are you there for studies ?

I would suggest stay temporarily in either a guest house or a sub let ( if available - people sublet completely furnished condos some times) .

This will help you in scouting different areas for renting and judge your comfort levels for eg Bedford , Clayton Park , down town or Dartmouth.

March - don't expect a lot of movement till say April - May due to snow ...
