Long back I used to like 24. Recently I watched "Breaking Bad" and was blown away. I think it was a mistake watching Breaking Bad because I find everything I watch now so useless. I stumbled upon British serial Sherlock which is good (but very short).
Any recommendations for a serial (that isn't brain dead)

I gave watching Breaking Bad my best shot - twice. I saw the 1st episode - gave it up and saw the 2nd one. I could not come to terms with the premise + the sheer violence. I seem to be the only person - since everybody who watched it - simply loves it. I guess this shows inflexibility.
For what it's worth - I loved Orange is the new black, West Wing, House of Cards, Suits and Dragon's Den. There are a few more I watched - House MD, Mad Men, Dexter, Drop dead diva (this would be mostly women viewers - when you want to have something on while multi-tasking).
Breaking bad brought me back to serial watching after 15 years. I , now, even watch bigg boss...
It takes 3-4 episodes to pick up the speed in Breaking bad. My wife gave up after the second episode but once 3rd started, it picked lot of steam.
Game of thrones has lot of violence too. Unfortunately, none of this sitcoms are something we could never watch with kids due to forced adult contents, you could see that it doesn't really mix much but for the same reasons of having items songs in Hindi movies, adult contents are added in the serials.

What you said about Hindi movies/serials is so true. I stopped watching hindi soaps - because my young son would make comments on how relationships in India are all evil/mercenary/destructive - and I thought - OMG! It is true - there are even elaborate murder plans in some mainstream serials - I remember one where the evil Bhabhi shorts the wires in a water heater (those stick types in the bucket) - they actually showed how she did it!!!!
I also can never get over how proud parents smile so fondly when their daughter dances to item numbers or their son does some horrible body moves to an even gross hindi song (with their tongue stuck out) - such videos are put on whatsapp family groups - and then the comments are so many oohs and aahs.
As I type this - I am realizing - that I have so crossed over the other side of the generation gap😝
- Yes you need to watch a few episodes of Breaking bad before it gets interesting and also it becomes less violent. I for one had difficulty getting through the initial violent episodes and depressing theme. But then it become my fav. serial ever .. as yet.
- Yeah I find it odd when kids (or adults) do sexually aggressive dance moves in parties and everyone says how sweet at the end.
- Btw JRF sitcomes (IMHO) means comedies .. generally 30 min comedies. Not the 1 hour drama programs we watch like game of thrones.
- Game of thrones sucks. Admit it you either watch it because everyone else watches it .. or you just want to see the sex scenes
- I have to watch "The Wire" .. not on netflix though.
