Suggest some TV serials

Long back I used to like 24. Recently I watched "Breaking Bad" and was blown away. I think it was a mistake watching Breaking Bad because I find everything I watch now so useless. I stumbled upon British serial Sherlock which is good (but very short).

Any recommendations for a serial (that isn't brain dead)

Hahahah... The same thing happened to me after watching breaking bad. I even gave up Newsroom http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1870479/?ref_=nv_sr_1 (while Im a Jeff Daniels fan) and House of cards http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1856010/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1, Dexter http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0773262/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 , Arrested Development http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367279/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1also.

But I stuck with all five seasons of "The wire" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 and "Game of Thrones" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0944947/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 so far and zeroed out "True Detectives" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2356777/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 and Boardwalk empire http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0979432/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 for next month.

My name is Earl http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460091/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 , Seinfeld http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098904/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 , Married with Children http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092400/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 are still my shows I repeat, trailer park boys http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290988/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 too.

I gave watching Breaking Bad my best shot - twice. I saw the 1st episode - gave it up and saw the 2nd one. I could not come to terms with the premise + the sheer violence. I seem to be the only person - since everybody who watched it - simply loves it. I guess this shows inflexibility.

For what it's worth - I loved Orange is the new black, West Wing, House of Cards, Suits and Dragon's Den. There are a few more I watched - House MD, Mad Men, Dexter, Drop dead diva (this would be mostly women viewers - when you want to have something on while multi-tasking).

It takes 3-4 episodes to pick up the speed in Breaking bad. My wife gave up after the second episode but once 3rd started, it picked lot of steam.
Game of thrones has lot of violence too. Unfortunately, none of this sitcoms are something we could never watch with kids due to forced adult contents, you could see that it doesn't really mix much but for the same reasons of having items songs in Hindi movies, adult contents are added in the serials.

What you said about Hindi movies/serials is so true. I stopped watching hindi soaps - because my young son would make comments on how relationships in India are all evil/mercenary/destructive - and I thought - OMG! It is true - there are even elaborate murder plans in some mainstream serials - I remember one where the evil Bhabhi shorts the wires in a water heater (those stick types in the bucket) - they actually showed how she did it!!!!

I also can never get over how proud parents smile so fondly when their daughter dances to item numbers or their son does some horrible body moves to an even gross hindi song (with their tongue stuck out) - such videos are put on whatsapp family groups - and then the comments are so many oohs and aahs.

As I type this - I am realizing - that I have so crossed over the other side of the generation gap😝

- Yes you need to watch a few episodes of Breaking bad before it gets interesting and also it becomes less violent. I for one had difficulty getting through the initial violent episodes and depressing theme. But then it become my fav. serial ever .. as yet.

- Yeah I find it odd when kids (or adults) do sexually aggressive dance moves in parties and everyone says how sweet at the end.

- Btw JRF sitcomes (IMHO) means comedies .. generally 30 min comedies. Not the 1 hour drama programs we watch like game of thrones.

- Game of thrones sucks. Admit it you either watch it because everyone else watches it .. or you just want to see the sex scenes :)

- I have to watch "The Wire" .. not on netflix though.

Rrright, that is why I 've mentioned My name is earl / Seinfeld, AD, TPB etc., along the line of other shows. I don't watch them as they are tele-casted, I generally catch up at a later date except Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones, why I like it. Well, many repeated reference from friends set me up first, I started appreciating the medieval setup, most importantly Ned Stark's character is of something I always love to watch, as it unfolded Rob Stark reflected similar characteristics and then the Dragon lady. Most importantly Peter Dinklage's super impressive style, despite his too humble figure he exhibits his prowess and finally Charles Dance for his authoritative actions. Ygritte and Gilly, I certainly enjoyed watching them in the medieval outfit.

Those age inappropriate contents you mentioned are the biggest bumps against getting our teens to sit and watch many shows, I even tried to search if there are any edited versions available (PG-13), no luck so far and I don't have required patience to sit and edit. I just replicate the story to my kids after watching good shows minus all the inappropriate contents for their age.

Sometimes I feel that the "age appropriate" - is for binding us parents. I always tell my older son - you will one day soon graduate to NC16 with your friends - but we are going to be stuck in PG for many more years (for my younger son).

I have watched each and every super hero and animated movie worth watching in theatres - but am unable to go watch Gone Girl (and many such more).

Such is the power of the medium - that I was eagerly looking forward to watching the Hobbit which released recently. I remember having such mixed feelings when I watched the first one.

Which is why I love Netflix so much. It allows me to watch more age appropriate stuff without the kid censorship😜
