Thanks every one for the detailed cost break-up and thought provoking insights about pros and cons of short and long term stays. Honestly speaking, I was surprised to see these much helpful responses, as I was not expecting this when I posted the query. Hats off to you guys and your valuable opinions have definitely helped me make the final decision- which is to accept this offer.
I don’t have long term plans, I am planning to stay for maximum 3 years only- as my job is to build a local team and train them. Also, as I am coming on ICT VISA, I will not be able to change job - as per my knowledge (Please correct me if I am wrong). I am negotiating with company to ensure that I will be considered for normal promotions when I am in Canada also, so that when I am back in India, I will still be getting salary as per my experience and industry standards in India then. If that works out, based on the inputs below, I feel it is a wise decision to accept this offer as I will have 1) some international experience and 2) a few additional lakhs in my bank balance.
I am expected to travelling December, and company has agreed to provide accommodation for 2 weeks. Now I am planning to bug you guys once again with queries about settling down etc , once I reach there :-) Till then thanks everyone for the great support !

You are welcome Sasi.
CD was just waiting to help a IT Software engineer as it has been almost 3 years since a IT person needed our help. FYI< CD is composed of 80% IT professionals so that will speak from their experience.
It is possible that you can apply for PR while you are here and then may be in 3 years you will get a PR.
Again, as per my experience, you salary is quite decent esp. when you have an Indian salary of just 1 lakh per month. I earn the same in Kerala, and so I know what my expenses are.
Two weeks accommodation is standard. So it is good.
Again, you have not said anything about your lifestyle. Hope you know that Canada offers a lot of free things like free parks, free library, free English courses, Free concerts, Free hot chocolate during Cavalcade of lights, Free this, Free that and so you will be able to enjoy as well as save lots of money. Where you will lose money will be in :

1. Rent / electricity
2. Food
3. Car, Gas, Insurance,
4. TV/ Internet / phone

Just be aware of Desi's who become close to you once you come here. They may either want to borrow money from you or they will try to join you in Amway (Quixstar)

Murali The Krishna

Hope this is of help.

I am an IT Project Manager with 10+ years of experience in India and my company is transferring me to our new Canada office in Mississauga (ICT-Intra Company transfer). I am offered CAD 80K per annum + other benefits (health insurance, bonus etc.) . Is this a good offer to accept? We are a family of two (me and wife only). What will be the standard living cost in Mississauga for a small family (rent for 1 bed room apartment, other costs)? Now I am getting INR 1 Lakh per month in India.

Are you coming here as a PR or just on a work permit ? What are your intentions ? Do you want to stay in Canada or go back after the work gets over ?

Not sure if its a temporary move or permanent move , so it depends on that.

80 K is a very good salary in Mississauga. Are you getting 1 lakh gross or nett in India ? If its nett then stay in India , especially if you are in a non metro as 1 lakh goes a long way in smaller cities in India.

If you are owning and not renting in India than stay in India. If you are dependent on servants , cooks , drivers , chaprasi etc then stay in India as here you and your wife will have to do everything like cooking , cleaning , buying groceries etc as labour is very expensive and you don't get domestic servants like India.

Also if you can't or won't tolerate cold , don't bother coming here, you will have issues.

You can get a very good 1 BR apt for $ 1,000 / month in Mississauga. Cheaper are also available, but wouldn't advise you to go for them. All inclusive , i.e rent + utilities.

Monthly bus pass is around $ 120 / month . You don't really need a car as the public transit is very good , on time and clean and efficient.

Weekly passes , daily tickets are also available for your wife in case she is NOT working and just occasionally travels .

For about $ 300/month both of you can eat well , i.e your grocery bills . So for just about 10 dollars a day you can eat well. I am talking about home cooking and mostly Indian food like fruits , veggies, rotis , dal , chawal , chicken and fish, sabhji , milk , eggs , bread etc.

Movies are around $ 10 - $ 12 per person..at movie theatres.
For about $ 10 per person you can get All You can Eat buffets at indian and Chinese restaurants.

Clothing , Shoes , Jackets etc are not expensive as long as you shop at non designer stores and go to places like Wal Mart , Target etc.

It kind of depends what you are coming for here.

For an IT Project Manager, is it a good salary? May be not. Just a thought, when building your team how would you feel if you had to pay more salary to people in your team reporting to you?

And assuming the total expense as 2.5 K (rent, food, car, other expenses), the saving will be just 1.5 K which is around 80K INR. So when I agree that this is better than my current monthly salary of INR 1 lakh, I don’t think it is “too good to be true” considering other factors about staying in India and abroad. Can you please tell me why do you think it is very good salary for a person getting INR 1 lakh per month in India?

Your Take Home Salary will be more than that. Also you might get some of the taxes you paid back, when you file an IT return. Very easy to do with a 20 bucks software. You do it yourself and file it online. Within 10 days you get the IT refund by direct deposit.

See below for your take home pay , will be around $ 58 K

You can get a very good used car for $ 5,000 , certified , safe and tested. cheaper also available.

Petrol is about $ 1.20 /litre. Car Insurance is cheap if you just go for a third party liability insurance. If you go for comprehensive insurance it can be more expensive, but you don't really need it for a used car. Regular oil change and a few routine maintenance which is not very expensive , will keep your car well and running.

Shop around a lot and use Insurance brokers , as the price for the exact same insurance varies a lot from company to company.

Initially i wouldn't advise you to go for a car , get a hang of the city , especially winter driving conditions and settle down a bit and then maybe go for a car after 4-5 months , if you really need.

If you haven't driven outside India before , it will take some time to get used to the driving conditions and etiquettes over here.

Do not go with Rogers , Bell or Telus for phone , cable or Internet , they will rip you off. Their wholly owned subsidiaries like Fido , Virgin Mobile and Koodo are equally bad :(.

Go with the smaller third party guys like Wind Mobile , Tek Savvy , Distributel etc.

Just give birth to a couple of kids here. By default they are Canadian citizens . Lot of desis do that. Take OCI for them i.e Overseas Citizen of India or PIO , Person of Indian Origin. PIO and OCI are now being merged by Modi.

Later on go back if you want , with or without Canadian citizenship for your wife and yourself. But your children will have it immediately by birth. For you and wife it will take time.

In future if your kids want to come back to Canada they can as Canadian citizens and also sponsor you, in case you also want to come back and are not Canadian Citizens.

If your kids are Canadians their university fees are low , but if they cone as Indian students in future they will pay international student fees which are enormous.

Upto Grade 12 education is free over here and health care is free for life ( but paid through your taxes ). The wait times are longer, but not for emergencies , but to see doctors , specialist etc for normal procedures.
