I searched this forum, but all electrician related posts are old - at least 4 years.

Does anybody know any reliable and licensed electrician to change the fixtures in my unit? Would calling anybody from ESA's directory help?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Meghal,

I don't think you need an electrician to change fittings inside your unit - unless you need new wiring. Most fixture fittings are pretty straight forward. Make sure you review and follow the fastening/mounting instructions for the fixture. On the electrical side there will be max 3 wires : Live, neutral and ground to disconnect from old and connect to the new fixture.

Feel free to call or email me if you need any help.

Don't forget to turn off the circuit breaker or switch before working on it and definitely do not touch the wire to test if they are live :)

Seems like a personal advertisement.

This name or phone number doesn't appear on ESA database

Our Electrical System here in Canada is SINGLE PHASE 110 Volt THREE WIRE system. Here is the break down of the same in the electrical books.

Function................. label............Color,.................. common
Protective ground PG...... green or green-yellow
Neutral................... N..............white
Line, (single phase)..L.......... black or red (2nd hot)

In most of our homes there is a location where we have a CIRCUIT BREAKER. It is normally located in the basement. The old system will have glass fuses and a ON/OFF switch. These are called the CIRCUITS and the switches are/is called the CIRCUIT BREAKERS.

In the newer systems the GLASS FUSEs are eliminated and they have automatically controlled 'trip' switches and these trips are the ones we call them as switch or as Circuit Breakers. In one position, they are ON and the other they are OFF.

So, before you tackle the job of changing the light fixtures, see which one of these CIRCUIT BREAKERS does control the light. Please leave your light "ON" and find out which breaker controls that light. When that particular breaker is switched off by you, the lights will go OUT. So, have a flashlight (TORCH) handy or do it in the day time.

Once you have that Particular breaker off, and you know that it controls the light that you want to change, you are ready to tackle the job.

SO MUCH TO DO BEFORE YOU EVEN GET STARTED? Yes, all of this is written here to tell you and ask you to follow faithfully, so that we will expect you to return here and tell us that you succeeded in your endeavour. (JOB)

Also if you are a handy man, you can get a small gadget from the dollar store which will tell you if there is power in any of these wires. It is called a tester.
WOW!! for BUCK FIFTY you will get to know if there is any JUICE in the wires and the system too.

THE RED or the BLACK wire is the HOT WIRE !! CAUTION, it could still be powered, if you did not switch the correct Circuit Breaker.

This should get you started. Any more questions, drop us a note here.

AND Good Luck.

FH.
