The quicker you make that transition, the better, because this is an acceptable way of life here. And kids do discuss this stuff in school, with or without their teacher.

Forget the law or the public circumstances. How would you handle that question when posed to you by your child? It's bound to happen and the less taboo you treat it, the better it would be.

The other day, we were watching some "reality" show and the individual who was speaking mentioned that he used to be a girl when he was young. My son picked it up and asked me what that was all about. And, I simply told him from A to Z what that could mean. He was satisfied with his curiosity and we all moved on.

While I may not have say how one lives his / her life.. Why that needs to be brought as part of education?

There is a difference in the 'perception' of the word 'education' between what we have experienced in our country and here.

We never had Sex-ed courses/discussions in our school/college or even at university level.

I understand here the concept of education encompasses all the facets of learning - not just science/maths and language. The kids are exposed to different forms of music and musical instruments, arts, physical exercises, mediums of communication etc.. Human body and variety of humans including their sexuality is considered part of learning for the child. The very aspect that the child was curious to know demonstrates the need to be told.

In earlier times we were not very comfortable discussing these subjects within family - so when a kid gets curious we divert the subject or give them stories about bees and birds. The culture here does not believe in beating around the bush and they deal with it direct and truthfully. How the information is transmitted and made to understand - that is the biggest grey area and the real concern. If done in a professional and scientific way - it needs to be appreciated and applauded. If done in a very juvenile or 'exploiting' way - that needs to be watched and reported.

As parents we need to take the initiative and correct any misconceptions/ill information they might have gathered in a non-influencing way. They need to develop their own opinions of right and wrong, good or bad with our help.

We are learning along with the kids..be patient.

Home schooling might be a good option, in this case.

Please consider the below gay facts of life.

1) Large numbers of "hidden" gay people continue to exist even in regressive societies where there is no concept of sexual education or awareness.
E.g Iran,Afghanistan,Pakistan etc. How do you explain that?
There is a growing scientific evidence of gayness being an expression of a gene similar to what makes us Asians, or black, or white or Mongoloid. Gay people are born gay - it's not a choice.

2) If our children do not get the correct information they will simply get it from other sources. Your kid’s teacher made things easier for you by being the person to answer questions which we would not be answering. I would thank her in return.

3) Funny thing is, we enjoy gay themes in movies whether it is "kal ho naa ho", “Dostana”, “Birdcage” etc. But, in reality we are dead scared of them. I have come across gay people in my professional and social circle and will comfortably say that they are some of the nicest and fun loving people one would come across. :-)

Rajagopal.
