Hi
I was working on a contract with a company, which ended and i went on maternity benefits. Now my maternity benefits have ended and i am looking for a job but not able to find any. Can i apply for normal EI while I am searching for job. My company had submitted ROE when the contract ended but they didn't state that contract has ended.
What's my best option?
Sorry, you canot.
At one time, you can get only one (max. 52 weeks) and then you need the min. insurable hours to start getting the next one.
However, you will be eligible for the second career programme offered (check if it is offered now ). You can get up to $ 28,000 for a program of your choice to upgrade your skills and you will get more than the EI amount (in total).
You can use the food banks / soup kitchen also to save on costs of food till you find a good job.

No it is free. You need not pay it back.
I received it in 2009 but a desi owner cheated me.

Prince,
It is like this. In 2008, a very big recession started and many ontarians were out of work and on EI. The govt. was worried that this will lead to welfare and food banks and people would not start working again. Mind you, this was scheme keeping locals in mind. People who served Canada for 20,30 years (in automobile field) and who were out of work.
So the govt. brought a scheme, where by one who has no or limited skills, can study/ upgrade using govt. money. It is a 3-6 months process, where you need to get appointment at a skill assessment centre. They will review your documents (in my case I submitted by 12th std. marksheet and said that I want to do SAP). Others got admission into sheridan, centennail where the tution fee was like $ 8000, $ 12,000 etc..
Second career will pay the tution fees. It will also pay your EI,if you get EI. So when I was getting $ 425 a week on EI, they stopped my EI and second career payed EI for me. They paid for my petrol and parking too.
This is all for short terms courses ranging from 6 months to 3 years. Course has to be full time and mon-friday only.
By mistake, I enrolled in SAP. The desi fellow took $ 15,000 from the govt., and gave me SAP access which costs $ 300. The teacher was a useless desi fellow, himself searching for a job. Text was SAP study material available on the internet for free and he will just project and read. Classes which were supposed to be held M-F (40 hours a weeks) was only on Saturday (6 hours)
I complained to the govt., but the govt. told me to repay. I told them to ask the Desi owner himself, but they did not have the guts to ask him. They waived off the tution fees but told me to pay petrol fees back. I refused.
There have been many cases, in which people have upgrades and found jobs in 2010, when the recession was slightly over.
Hope this helps. I will be free to answer your questions.
