So, Fido looks like you bought the Elements one from Target.
Now, I am in the market for a new TV as well. My current 3LCD projection is having issues after I changed the lamp - getting horizontal colored lines on top and bottom (Sony's Optical Block issue, darn!), otherwise great picture. Only if this happened before December, I could've saved a few bucks on Boxing day. Anyhow! This is life.
So, I am planning either Samsung or Sharp. Although, I am very clear on what specifications I am looking for, yet would like to know which brand is better these days. LG is cheaper, but I am not keen on this one. I don't know but I don't get positive vibes out of LG and Sony. Rather, my interest is Samsung or Sharp. How's Sony these days, by the way? Seems like it's going down the hill.
Does anyone know how are these two brands with respect to the Warranty, quality, service, pricing, etc.? Also, which store has the competitive pricing, FS, Best Buy, WalMart, Source, or Costco?
As mentioned above, I am clear on what specifications I want. Just wanted to zero in on the Brand and the store as others might have experienced thus far.
On the same note, I live in BC near the US border, and the US shopping town is only half an hour from my house. Should I consider buying from there? I see a considerable price difference of $200-300. The only flip side, I am afraid to carry it back to the store in case of any issues. But hey! I have a car to tow it to the store - the good part . Not a big hassle, if I end up saving a considerable monies.

FH - I found this remark quite witty and enjoyed it while reading it ...
However - for $400/- (plus taxes and fees) they were giving a 55" 120Hz LED HDTV with in the box and .... I got one !

I surely would like to have a few features in a TV, to get the best enjoyment while watching the same. None of the features that I see in todays Tv were there in the intial stages of developement. So, what we think that we will require, changes as technology advances. So, I would like to buy one that I can live with for a few years after I purchase one. How many are "FEW", depends upon if I will find the features that are yet to arrive make a few remarkable viewing differences and those features are really worth the price.
Most of the LIVING Rooms are 12 x 12 or 12 x 14 and a few will render a larger TV within that room. The main reason being, the diagonal viewing distance say 40" (Inch) will be great for a room of the 12 x 12 size as the distance one sits away from, should be 2.5 tomes the size of the TV. So, 40" will call for a distance of 100" or NINE FEET. So, you can go up a notch or two bigger to suit the living room.
Needless to say, I do not want anything "Wall to Wall" and that includes the TVs also.
Also we do miss a few of the desirable features in the smaller TVs and so, we tend to exceed not only our budgets, but also the aesthetics that we base our viewing upon, because the manufacturers do not want to provide them on smaller ones! So, I am out of luck there.
So, what can I get for 400 bucks? It might as well be the empty 50" box!! that has a unknown name in which the On -OFF switch stops functioning after a few uses. YES, that is what all of the cheap ones do! And the cure, you guessed it, leave it on for ever.... and if there is no picture may be use it for just music!!!
So, I do my own research and see some of the consumer reports, the latest ones, in a library on these TV's. Might take a few minutes there and a quiet viewing and a 10 cent photo copy of the page that I need, prior to buying a decent one, that will give me a few years of viewing pleasure for me and my friends who drop in for a few suds.
I am not competing or catching up with the JONESSES.
Live right. And within my means...

There s this RFD thread on the Element TV I brought and I m glad I did ... Enjoying it every evening !!

Between Samsung and Sharp , my awareness may be dated but perhaps on this forum or elsewhere , have heard all good for Sharp Aquos ...
Buying a TV from the US .. not economically feasible unless you have a bigger car / van ... Also for those who wish to , it might be interesting to browse through RFD how people have brought TV s from some vendors like Pauls TV ( if I recall correctly) who perhaps ship for free @ a US address which can be a Post Office / Courier Company who will receive and store the TV for you for $10-$20/- and you can collect with in 24-48 hours .
People have done it and shared their experience on RFD .

Thanks Fido,
I have now ruled out buying it from US - too much hassle. Besides, I think they don't honour out of country warranties. A real nightmare.
Anyhow, on another thought, my existing TV is working fine for now, which I think would sustain another year or so. I have forgone the idea to buy a new one.
Will wait for this boxing day to splurge .
I believe you did the right thing .... 4k HD is the next selling point of TV s ...
