For your inputs and advice .. Glad I asked and learned about the refresh rate .

Smart TV s internet connectivity ( apart from the HDMI) - is is smarter than that of the streaming devices - I mean do Roku / Apple TV offer more programming or functionality than regular smart TV s .. asking this as it might be better to buy a non-smart TV with a streaming player as this might need to be upgraded in future .

Also - Is the refresh rate apparent with gaming only or with regular TV programs and movies also ?

One hypothetical q - Suppose both these TVs cost the same .. which one to prefer (usage non gaming) :

a. 46" 1080p LED 120 Hz .
b. 55" 1080p LED 60 Hz .

Go for option a.

Refresh rate is generally for action movies and sports where objects are consistently moving in fast speed. You will notice less than perfect picture quality on 60Hz, and it's apparent. 120Hz, though nothing compared to the 240, but the loss in picture quality while watching Sports and Action movies doesn't visible much to the normal eyes.

Go for 120. But, if the price difference is only less than $200, I would recommend 240. You won't repent paying for the quality.

LG LG and LG
I have a samsung TV at home and I recently bought LG cinema 3D Tv. It is awesome in every aspect. All the features are excellent.

If you see your pictures in the TV by plugging USB drive, the TV can convert it to 3D and show it to you. I have a garbage kind of dreambox for indian shows but LG converts it to HD or 3D what ever i want.

The same dreambox on Samsung, picture quality is so poor (Samsung Tv is like 5 yrs old)

I am not comparing samsung / lg here, but just leeting you know my experience. Samsung's new tv might have same thing but pricewise LG is lot cheaper and brings best to you.

Hope this helps

Why wait for boxing day? I think boxing day deals are mostly for outdated products. When in doubt always go to Costco. Warranty, quality, peace of mind and vfm is always there.

Thanks again

Febpreet , I read that pcmag article on refresh rates .. quite enlightening - it does mention that for normal non action viewing 60 Hz should suffice .. in fact it mentions that for watching every day movies / drama you may need to tone down to 60 Hz on higher refresh rate TV s ...

But I m sticking on to 120 Hz for now based on common suggestions ..

Just started some window shopping ..At factory direct these 3 TV s are for $600/- .. One of them actually a 60" LED with 120 Hz .. not many in stock of that though ... Pls grade them as 1, 2 , 3 .. Thanks ..

Rule out Seiki completely.

Other two LG ones seem to be the same. I would go for LG4750 for the BluRay and 3D Glasses.

Thanks for the response FP ,

I have shortlisted the major brands like LG , Samsung , Sony , Philips , Sharp etc and a screen size of 55" or 60" ..

I have one more query - since I can wait till the coming May to buy a TV - will the same TV be cheaper on boxing day or 5 months later .... based on history of prices... Thanks ....

If you're looking to buy something in May, then why bother now. You will have more broader range and newer models by then. Keep an eye on Boxing day as well. If you find a good deal, then go for it. In any case from Boxing Day to May, the price difference won't be much, may be 100-200 bux.

I would say, go for it now if you find a good deal and if your pockets allow. Of-course with time, you will have the same TV a little bit cheaper (just a little bit).

You decide.

What are the chances these TVs will still be selling in May 2014? These are refurbished/clearance items.

Take unknown brands out of the list, such as Elements, RCA, Philips (I know it's known, but for TVs I would rule this out). Then, to further shorten the list, rule out all 60Hz ones. For some reasons, even unknown to me, I personally don't like LG and Toshiba.

You can't go wrong with 240Hz in the long run. You don't buy TVs everyday. Right?

Samsung Smart 50" 120 699 T
Sony 50" LED 3D TV 240Hz 829 S
Samsung 55" 240Hz Smart 999 S
