Hello,

I would like to take suggestion from you regarding living areas and English Linc classes for PR's.

1)How is the area of Don mills and Lawrence for renting an apartment regarding security, convenience, grocery stores and bus stop?I am choosing this location due to good ranking of schools in this area?Any problem of bed bugs or roaches here?

2)Our second choice is Victoria Park and Eglinton apartment to rent,so how is this area to live regarding security, convenience and bus stop?Any problem of bed bugs or roaches here?

3)As there are 7 levels of Linc classes,Academic English classes and few more free by goverment for PR's ,so after doing all these free language classes does one still need to study ESL in any community college by paying fees or those Linc classes are enough for desis language improvement ,fluency and accent?Need your suggestions and advices......
Thanks for reading !!!

1. Don Mills and Lawrence has a metro, around a block S on Don Mills

2. I would stay away from Vic Park & Eglinton. The area is not that great. Although it has a No Frills right at the intersection

3. As regards to LINC etc. are you planning on attending language classes only to improve your accent or to actually learn English. I doubt if they'll admit you (to the free classes) if it is only to improve your accent. For improving your accent, just watch enough TV and listen to people on the subway

IT HAS BECOME MADATORY TO HAVE A LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE THAT IS RECOGNIZED BY THE CITIZENSHIP COURT... So, take this course, if you do not have one. It is free.

Language classes

To learn English or French, permanent residents can take taxpayer-funded and/or private language classes. Taxpayer-funded classes are offered by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial governments across Canada, and are free of charge. You will need to pay for private language classes.

Children and youth will learn English and French in school.

Taxpayer-funded language classes offer:

General language classes at many levels.
Classes that teach advanced and workplace specific language skills.
Classes that teach literacy and language (for people who have a hard time reading and writing in any language).
Classes for people with special needs.

Registering for taxpayer-funded language classes

Before starting a class, you must first get an assessment to find out your current language skills. Visit a language assessment centre in your city and say that you are interested in taking language classes.

You can do a self-assessment test to find out your current language level before doing a formal language assessment.

To find information about other language training programs funded by the provinces or territories, visit the website for newcomers of the province or territory in which you live. You can also get information on all taxpayer-funded language training programs available to you from a local immigrant-serving organization.
Language proficiency tests and certificates

There are some cases in which you may need to prove your ability in either English or French (for example, when you apply for a job or to get into a university or college). There are several language tests that are widely recognized. You will get a certificate of language proficiency that you can use in many situations.

English language tests and certificates:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
This is offered around the world
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
Test centres are located in Canada
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Commonly required by universities and colleges

LINK : http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomers/after-education-language.asp

CELPIP : http://www.celpiptest.ca/
These courses will be available to NEWCOMERS for FREE for the first TWO Years of your stay here.

So, find a location nearby, and take the classes and when you pass the course make sure you get the certificate and frame it.

FH.

Bed bugs, rats, cockroaches, mosquitos etc., are related to a particular apartment and request the Super that the apartment be fumigated before you enter. You should double up on the cleaning to suit your requirements and make sure you do not have them in the boxes that you are bringing in or the clothes and matresses that you buy and use. Since these are personal matters, you will have to be vigilant and eradicate them at the first sign of you seeing them.

Also most of the heating and cooling systems are individual to each apartment and make sure that these pests are not resident in the equipment. If it is hydronic heating, then, there will be no ducts. Individual AC's are a source that you will have to inspect and eliminate if they exist in them.

Pantries, stoves and dishwashers are prone to have these and reside within them. Clean and inspect upon entry into the apartment. There are ant and fly traps available in Dollar stores that you can use initially to trap them, if you find them. And it will be nice to have a can of bug spray, if you think it is called for. Some of the items are very expensive and hence th fumigation of the apartment by a pest control professional.
