If previous furnace is not high efficiency and is 12 + years old , than it may be a good idea to replace it due to efficiency and safety concerns . Generally most furnaces last 15- 18 years .
AC - its very subjective since AC is not used all year long . They last longer than furnaces . If the AC is rectangular shape and green in colour - replace it .
If coil or condensor is damaged - replace it .
AC older than 8 years were generally of 10 SEER rating . Now min rating is 13 SEER . Every SEER saves roughly 8 % of electricity . Do the math and if you are paying too much in electric bills - replace it .

Mine is approx 1500 Sq ft. , 2 storey hse, Main +2 floors, whatbrand & specs of furnace+ A/c do you suggest, and approx cost if you are aware of it?

There are way too many variables to determine the best fit for a house . As a rule of thumb 800 Sqft required 01 tonne of cooling .
I personally like High efficiency furnace 92 % efficient ( not variable speed DC motor ) made by Carrier .

Mine is about 10 years old. Last year the capacitor gave out on the AC and had it replaced for about $80 (labor included). This year, I just found out that the furnace is ticking on and off (trying to turn on) but not working. The blower is working. Could be the thermocouple, but not sure. I'll just wait till the cooler season and have someone look at it.
