Shahnaz Husain shreds into pieces Louis Vuitton bags to make gowns:
Shahnaz Husain, the beauty care diva tears up into pieces many brand new Louis Vuitton bags in order to stitch up her gowns. Expensive brands and products allow the rich to be differentiated from the rest. Husain said "I always buy two identical LV bags. One is cut into pieces to design my clothes - I use them as patches on the sleeves and collars. In the last 30 years, I have bought several hundred bags. LV is a magnet and I feel drawn to it,” as reported by ET. An LV handbag in India would cost above Rs 50,000. The LV collection in Shahnaz’s wardrobe is crafted at her bungalow in South Delhi, and most of the gowns she dresses in are designed by her and stitched by an in-house tailor.
Abraham Koshy, professor of marketing at IIM-Ahmedabad says it is a way of the rich in reassuring not only others, but also themselves that they have arrived in life and such people have the financial power to do so. But Koshy says that many of them look for bizarre ways to differentiate themselves from the crowd. He says "If everyone can buy an LV, how am I any different?"
Trip to North Pole for birthday celebration:
While in another instance, a Delhi-based exporter is going to the North Pole with a couple of friends in order to celebrate his 40th birthday. The organizer said “they have paid around Rs 60 lakh per person to be a part of ‘the Extreme driving expedition’ being held in March,” reported by ET.
Real estate tycoon calls for 60 Rolex watches to go with the invites for daughter's wedding:
In another example of extravagant spending, a Noida-based real estate tycoon ordered 60 Rolex watches to go with the invites of his daughter's wedding. A social scientist said to ET "The idea is to get a psychological edge over others in the group."
Niro Sivanathan, assistant professor of organizational behavior at London Business School and Nathan Pettit of Cornell University's Johnson School of Management in a recent study found that consumers spend more on high-status goods when their ego is threatened. It said that luxury goods usually act as psychological armour, instead of just being status symbols.
An expensive apology of Rs 60 lakh:
The list has more! Recently, the wife of a Delhi-based businessman wanted to convey her apologies for not making it to a high-profile wedding. And as a gesture she got three 'Birkin bags' imported and sent it out to the bride's family along with a card that read "Sorry, I could not attend your wedding." She further sent to the groom's family Jimmy Choo shoes and bags.
Birkin handbags, named after singer Jane Birkin are handmade leather handbags by Hermes. They are considered a symbol of wealth due to their price tags. Sonia Deshmukh, head-marketing of Quintessentially Lifestyle, a firm that provides luxury concierge services was quoted by ET "Our client paid a premium of Rs 1 lakh for each bag and the total bill for the three bags was over Rs 60 lakh to get them imported from Tokyo in two weeks."
Rs 50,000 for a bottle of Japanese Whiskey:
Further Deshmukh’s concierge firm recorded for nine cases of a Japanese whiskey, costing over Rs 50,000 a bottle that were ordered to be served at a pre-wedding function organized by a businessman at Musoorie. It was also made sure that any one present at the function that got a taste of the whiskey should not know how it can be sourced.
