Edmonton is a nice place. Small town kind of a place with conveniences of a big city. Although Alberta is reputed to be full of rednecks, I found Edmonton people to be very sweet and friendly compared to GTA. Its slighly more blue collar than Calgary, but not as much attitude in people as in Calgary.
Lots of Indians in Milwood area. I used to live in South West near LRT. General cost of living will be cheaper than GTA in terms of rent, insurance, gas, etc. Grocery will be more expensive but no PST which is a good thing although prices will be marked up.
One thing to really watch out for is the weather. Winters are very long and very cold compared to GTA. Not sure about opportunities in your field. Go with moderate expectations and try hard.
Good luck
Heritage park Apartments are very nice and reasonable, but they are Adults only Apartments and don't allow kids. Three years ago one bed room apt was 900 dollars including utilities. Insuite washer and dryer and Indoor Gym etc.
