Hi All:

After all the hue and cry about unemployment in Canada, has anybody claimed the unemployment insurance? I believe that this government supports the unemployed people and that is one of the reasons for high taxes.

Thanks
Sangeetha

Hi Sangeetha,

I believe you are not yet in canada, rather it seems from your other posts that you have not even applied for immigration and are still deciding for the same. I hope when you do come to Canada, because of yours and your husbands qualifications, you will land good jobs and may not have to be in the que for 'Employment Insurance'.

Just to clear some mis conceptions. This word is 'Employment Insurance' and not unemployment insurance. What's the difference..? It is paid to the people who beome unemployed after working and not to the people who do not work and are unemployed.

Its a social benefit given to those hard working people who have put in their efforts and hard earned money first into a pool of funds and then they get it once they become unemployed because of job loss.

When you are employed, a part of your gross salary, presently around 2.2% from your each pay check goes towards a pool of funds called 'Employment Insurance' and out of this pooled savings of millions of employed people you get the 'Employment insurance' when because of shortage of work or otherwise, you are laid off from the job. You do not generally get this if you resign or get fired. However, even after getting 'laid off', you will be entiled for the 'E.I' for a certain amount of weeks (between 35 to 45 weeks) and for qualifying for the same even you have to put in some minimum amount of 'work hours' (around 900+ work hours initially)

Hence, it has got nothing to do with high rate of 'Income Tax' in Canada. Interestingly, the 'E.I' fund in Canada has a very healthy surplus (around 50 billion dollar or so I think)
