India opened its supermarket sector to foreign chains on Friday after months of dithering, pushing ahead with the boldest reforms yet in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government as it tries to revive the country's tottering economic growth.

It is all B******t. This is the last act of Brutus (MMS) who has stabbed in heart of India. I had opened a separate thread on CD regarding MMS selling India in pieces. I think Wal-Mart has reached out to MMS/Sonia. The retail sector has all the big players of India like Ambani, Birla and Tata. To say that the retail sector needs FDI for technology or money is ridiculous beyond belief. It is anti national and anti hindu policy. MMS is one fox who is bent on destroying India and this time he is likely to succeed. He must have purchased Mulayam or Mamta or both with enormous kitty filled with all kinds of scams. Opening doors for Wal-Mart would kill millions of small businesses, which would be replaced by Wal-Mart jobs with minimum, pay, no benefits. The Wal-Mart effect is quite visible in North America. Just think for a moment – Would any of us take up a job in Wal-Mart? If no, why not? At least in North America Dollar stores give a good competition to Wal-Mart due to open trade policies. In India, MMS/Sonia + Bureaucracy would ensure that there is no competition to Wal-Mart. MMS has done a huge favor to India’s arch enemy , China. It is a last act of most desperate but corrupt guy. Anyway, as Hassan Nisar, a sharp political commentator of Pakistan says (mainly in context of Pakistan) that the PEOPLE deserve this because the people are so moron that they carry their killers to the graveyard on their shoulders. I guess his statement applies to the people of India who are so divided on caste, religion and regions that MMS kind of monster has now
Economist 1 Politician 0
Finally a masterstroke by Sardar ....... this is a step in the right direction and will help jumpstart the economy again.

I welcome the move though I am sure that because of this (though what ever check are there) the gap between the rich and the poor will grow more.
When I came to India in April 2011, I could hardly see any beggers in the part of town that I live but now in 2012, I am seeing more and more people begging.
Indians are always looking for stuff to buy and the entry of IKEA, Walmart, Tesco and the like will sure shift the perspective of people.
Time will tell and decide.
Peace

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
The Wal-Mart like FDI developments will work in India (or anywhere in the globe) if these stores sell the products made in *that* country. This allows everyone to benefit from the efficient supply chain.
In reality, these stores are selling close to 95% of stuff made in China which drives the Chinese jobs and economy. Walmart is on a new drive to automate what few jobs are remaining in the store. Eg: the new cellphones will have a capability to scan the item directly and charge your credit card.
Yes, costs will become cheaper to the consumer. But, what good is it if the consumer does not have the buying power to consume the goods?
Someone please explain to me if my above argument is wrong. I hope I am wrong, but I await a reply from someone who knows how this really works.
