Hi Guys,

I have a friend who is thinking of moving to Calgary, one year of software testing experience and 2 years in accounting/clerical jobs in Toronto. Any guys for Calgary can give some pointers as to whether the move is a good decision

Apart from work..life in general in Calgary...desi community...expenses...stuff...

...appreciate your inputs...

Thanks

It is the weekend and you posted on Sat. Once we all get to work, we'll get busy on CD and you might get few pointers.

Anyway, I personally am not familiar with Calgary.

I would consider the move to be a smart move because for the next 10 to 20 years jobs are going to flourish in this part of Canada than the eastern side. Or at least that is the hope. Canada being the conservative country it is, might not be be an immediate happening place, even if it is calgary. Personally I feel Ontario hasn't lost it all though. But I think jobs can be found (either suiting you or you suiting it):D easily in this part of Canada due to the abundant oil business in Alberta and Saskatchewan that has only just started. Calgary is a mid size city, I would say. Not many pubs and dance bars like toronto or GTA. Not many temples, but there are quite a few. But there are a handful of good indian restaurants, a thriving punjabi community (as well as desi) and relatively better traffic (although it sucks during the peak time). Gas is cheapest in Calgary and all over Alberta. Rest are all a bit expensive than the other provinces (don't let me start about the food prices). Houses are relatively cheaper to buy than ON or BC. Almost forgot to say, weather sucks big time. Snow will not be shoveled off and you got to literally roll your tires in that snowy ice from not getting skidding during winters. Well if there are one too many Pros, got to be some cons too right? but what the hell, snow is like 6 more months away and we have got the stampede coming up.

PS: For those of you who dont know what a stampede is, it is a cow boy festival where men and women dress like cowboys(girls), drink crazy, stay awake all through the nights, puke, pee in the streets and also make passionate, violent lovemaking (I wouldn't call it much of a love though) on the streets. Got to watch it to believe it.

Well, you pretty much summed it up very well. To add, I think the pay is slightly higher than Ontario by about 10%-20% which should compensate for food and other prices and jobs are not that difficult and rather easy to get. I moved here 4 years back after staying in Toronto for 6 years and have no complaints other than the cold.
