In case I'll get laid off while I am on TN visa, can I stay in USA on base of my wifes Jobs on TN visa?
meitsme,
Best thing would be to enquire with the company reg cost of living etc and the locals, if u know in the city where u may relocate. Cost of living in Calif changes depending upon the city / suburb. The HR in the company will know more. I am sure there will be desi cultural associations in the city, particularly from where u come from and the laguage u speak. Google and check. Call them up and ask. There is nothing wrong in asking them. You will get more realistic info.
IMO, take the offer and move. There are more job opp in Calif. US is a bigger economy than Canada. U took some risk when u moved to Canada, right? Same thing here. Move to Calif and leave other things to the almighty.
C'mon CDs, why are u discussing lay offs when the guy has not even moved. Companies like Oracle or MS have shut down? No, they are still there and doing well. Why is everyone assuming that there will be lay offs? I dont get it.
KM
I generally feel very positive living here but as some one who has lived in Silicon Valley California for years, what Silicon valley has to offer is vastly UNPARALLEL to GTA...
Personal life, I still see an edge here but hey, I was a TRV in California, I never gave 100% as a resident there.

I have few more question for you guys.
How easily I can get rights to stay in USA if loosing job on TN or H1B? and for how long?
What are the risk of buying home without GC?
If you lose your job, you are out of status as a TN or H1. Technically, (I haven't seen one in writing), you are expected to leave the country within a "grace period" of 10 days. However, as a Cdn citizen, you tend to get a more liberal discretion (again one of those unwritten things).
In other words, if a person with Indian citizenship requiring a visa would have a more stressful time since packing up and leaving in a "moments notice" could be traumatic, let alone possible inability to re-enter. In your case, you can simply go to Canada, re-enter later to wrap up and you can openly declare that to a border officer as they are all familiar with such situations. I've done this when few years ago, I lost my job. I entered US several times to return the work laptop, move 401ks and such and I told the border officers what I was doing.
As far as owning a home, you could, but you face the above mentioned situation, not to mention your ability to pay the mortgage gets affected.

One of my acquaintance, who is on TN status and working as a contractor in Boeing has bought a house in States. I couldn't understand as to how are they handling the uncertainty, and I think he was being too bold to take this decision. This guy is now living in a 4 bedroom mansion style detached home (worth $470,000) having a contractor's job and TN status. Is this too courageous? I don't know.
So, yes you cant buy a house with TN status. However, in my opinion it's not worth it even if you're getting a big jump in salary. It will be starting all over again. In addition to it, you have your parents' visa awaiting. You need to ask yourself if you can manage this relocation? Trust me, relocating oneself is no fun at all especially with the family.
For me, it's too much man; and certainly not worth it, especially when you're living in a similar (and BETTER) country and making a decent dough.
Why uproot yourself unnecessarily? Think about it deeply.

Hi All,
I am canadian citizen and working in IT industry in Canada. I have an offer of 110K from CA, USA. I have townhome here and living with family. I have two kids.
Company is ready for relocation amount, H1B and processing green card.
I had no plan to look for job in USA or move to USA but I am thinking after this offer.
What do you suggest on base of current economy?
What happens to green card process if I leave the company and join another company on H1B?
What is cost of living?
How much the cost of 1800 sq ft. townhome in areas near by silicon valley?
What else I should consider for relocation?
I'll definitely enjoy weather in compare of snow in canada.
Thanks,
