It is because "Ghar ki Murgi Daal barabar"..

I know it's been touched many times that's why felt sorry from deviating from the OP. I could delete if you want. No hard feelings. Sorry again.

Nope, it wasn't offensive.

Thank you everyone for the thoughtful responses. It is really interesting to me. I can see how a quota system at university could help minorities and disadvantage others. Especially when some of those benefiting from the quota may not have even been aware of their minority status, as the story Blue Lobseter shared. I know until recently it was thought to be beneficial to highlight ethnic minority status in medical school interviews and essays in Canada, so there may be some parallel there because many of those applying for medical school were not from bad circumstances but the children of successful people themselves - incidentally I don't think this tactic is very effective anymore.

ramesh0634 thank you for sharing your personal story. It reminds me of how annoyed I get when the hospital here asks what religion you are. I know they only do this at some hospitals where they have chaplains so they know if they should send someone around but it annoys me because it is one of their first questions and I don't think it should matter at that point. I have nothing against arranged marriages when both parties want that, but it is nice to hear you were able to marry the one you wanted despite caste differences.

Vandematram your point about racism against those with ethnic names in Canada is well taken, but I was really curious about caste as it is somewhat different (although I see there are parallels). It may seem that all Canadians have a naive view of racial relations from the rosy picture the government paints, but most younger educated Canadians are aware racism exists here in many forms. I was told during casual conversation at my old job a few years ago that my name is too ethnic, and I am European descended. I realized later the fancy lawyer who told me this has a very English name and is probably not Enlgish or white...

Caste seems interesting to me because it is rooted in a person's history, may not be something people can tell just from looking, and many western people aren't aware it still exists. I did learn about it briefly in elementary school here in Canada - we were taught that it does not exist anymore.

Anyway thank you again everyone for sharing your stories and your time.

You try to sound "Shani" (wise) person but it is obvious to me that you have purposefully ignored to research the reason and origin of Caste system, its original intent and basis of classification and subsequent distortion, use of caste classification by British and subsequently V.P. Singh and Christian missionaries to divide and destroy Hindu. By the way, the crimes committed by Italian or Portugese Crusaders were more heinous, violent and repulsive than Indian Caste system.

A slightly different perspective.

Btw, 'caste' is a Portuguese word and is not used in India the same way as it is used in west.

Nightmare ji: Portia is simply curious and here on the forum to get personal experiences of CD's in relation to this system. One can choose to answer or ignore the topic.

I see no reason in blaming her ancestors or her ethnicity for a centuries old Hindu practice, which is currently on its way out.

Peace,

Rajagopal.
