FYI - It is a wrong assumption that resigning / quitting doesn't qualify one for EI. Call HRDC to find the details. If circumstances force you to resign, quit, you may be eligible for EI. Agree even the maximum amount of EI is measly..
EI rules are funny. e.g. if you go for training during EI, you become ineligible for EI. Reason: You are not available for work for that period.

Thank you all for the feedback. After a careful review from all the replies I decided and have resigned today. I found a job with another company as an independent consultant/contractor.
It will be different for me as I wont be employed anymore but I hope to this is the right time to go solo.
Best wishes,
Azeem

For getting EI after quitting , it gets complicated, you have to have a case that u are being harassed at the company.
HRDC cannot advice u on this because there are no set rules for this.
I know a friend of mine quit my company and then claimed EI.. He said he was harassed and all his reasons he told me did not seem to be a great justification.
His EI was approved because the company i worked for did not contest his claim.
What i have seen is in general HRDC is sympathetic to employees in private sector because companies at times start harrasing employees to force employees to quit instead of laying off and having to deal with lawsuits, increased EI premiums and other HRDC process complications in terms of replacing empoyees.
If you get permission for the training , then u can continue to receive EI , get reimbursed for the training and on top of that u might get some extra expenses like day care expenses for children.

Dude,
anyways he is now with another job and so he will not be looking for EI.
But for the benefit of new comers to the cdn. system, EI officials as fair to private employees. One of the reason is that there is ton of EI money that they want to distribute.
Once in 2009, my employer picked up a fight with me and at the end he fired me.
He put Fired in my ROE. I applied for EI and got it without even the EI officials calling me to verify my side of the story.
I then applied for my dues from my employer. After 9 months, the claim became current but the employer refused to pay me. Then the issue was escalated and after 3 more months, I got my dues.
Again please donot think that the officials are sympathetic to immigrants. These are laws which are implemented without seeing your face (as done in interviews etc...)
Peace
