I want to hire a real estate agent to buy a house. My friends have suggested a couple of names, but I want to be more systematic.

1. What are the basic criteria one should use to select an agent?

2. Are all agents suitable for all areas of Toronto? For example, let’s say I want to look for a house in Oakville. In that case should I hire an agent whose main market is Oakville?

3. I don’t want to be pushed to make a deal. How should I clarify this with the agent?

4. Should I hire more than one agent?

5. How can I figure if an agent is working sincerely for me?

Thanks you in advance.

All real state agents are, they will push you to buy the house. After buying the house , they will not be in touch with you. It is good to have agent in the city where you are buying the house, reason is it will save your time in looking at the houses.Try to negotiate wilh agents, to get you cashback on purchase deal of the house.

Not true. The agent I worked with 4 yrs. back never pushed us to buy anything. When we expressed doubts about places he showed, he would clarify from his perspective, but always told us to think several times since we were spending the money. Any time we said we were not comfortable with a place he showed, he would move on to other listings. Lastly, I still get emails from him for New Year's / Diwali etc.

There's bad apples everywhere, but that said, there's some professionals folks out there too, you just have to find the right one.

How would you like to hire or interview Java developer if you do not know programming?
Just by reference,
asking simple question from Google,
by seeing just resume
How many technical words he can throw in interview

If you are Java developer then how would you like to hire or interview Java developer?

Realtors are like snow tires which helps but you still need to be a good driver and understand law of physics in icy conditions.

BL I may get in trouble for challenging your opinion about the realtor...
He never pushed you...dont you think you were lucky that he never pushed you...he was cordial and patient enough not to push you. You only mentioned that he clarified the things. House is such a thing that you have to do homework what you are looking for and what you need..realtor's job is to closely meet those criterias including budget...what if he would have pushed you for the house..lets say near landfill which typically stinks at night..I can go on and on ...
I would have agreed to call the agent a bad apple if he would have pushed you into buying a grow house....
metallurgy may have read between the lines and may be asking for the details for same reasons...
Again when buying a house that is not from builder, there is no perfect house, you have to compromise a bit with open mind. I would rather buy a new house few miles away with the amenities that I want than get a house of which most of the things were used, chosen by others and on top of it pay for realtors fees (indirectly buyer bears the cost).

Just to clarify I was not your agent and not in the businesss of real estate and dont hack into my laptop ;) just kidding there is nothing on my playbook.....and please dont disable my ID, I am hooked on to it, I will remove the comment if you did not like the truth...:(
