What are the current trends in the hiring process for a job in the financial sector?
Is it mandatory to mention the name of your immediate manager as a reference check?
I don’t share a good rapport with my manager, and have ongoing personality clash issues with him since last 1-1/2 yrs.
Recently, I lost out an internal opportunity inspite of a very successful interview and when I confronted the hiring manager, she indirectly stated that my present manager did not give a good feedback about my productivity/quality of work.
I have been with this company for quite some time, but now I have decided to move on for better prospects elsewhere. I am a bit worried that if I mention my current manager as my reference point, things might not work out favorably during the interview process, because I am very sure that he is not going to give a good feedback.
I have other manager’s that I have worked with in the past as a good reference point, but I am not sure whether providing those names instead of the current manager’s name would jeopardize my chances or not, because the hiring company would definitely find out during background check that the name mentioned is not my current manager.
What are the possible work-arounds for this kind of a situation?
Should I let the hiring company know upfront very honestly that I am not comfortable in providing my current manager’s name as my reference point, because we are having some ongoing issues? What would be the best way to handle this issue during the interview process?
Thanks for your time!!
No, you do not have to provide your current manager as a reference. Clearly, that would violate the confidentiality of your job search or transition process. This is regardless of your rapport or lack thereof with your manager.
You can provide names of people that are not related to your current place of employment.

We do reference checks for most major banking, IT industries.... Who are our clients.... There is flexibility as to who you give as a reference..... It can also be a peer.... We usually do 2 references in the past 5 yrs.... Alongwith a credit/criminal/education/world check.....
However, it can depend company to company.....

This is for a financial concern in the private sector.... From what I gained..... Oops... I read Reference Checks.... And missed during personal interview..... Please note that my remarks were for background and reference checks done by professional companies usually approved by the prospective hiring firm .....
Providing reference of a senior colleague worked for me.. I was sure my manager would have panicked so kept him out of the loop till resignation. I was given emotional farewell !
