The one thing I always refrain from is to hang our jackets inside the entry door closet. This is what I noticed people do more often, and hence the smell that's emanating from the kitchen on the same floor.
Second, we make sure to keep all our bedroom doors shut when it's time to cook, so as to keep the 'Tadka' smells out. And, then of-course using the kitchen hood fan for the entire cooking session.
Above all else, keep the clothes that you wear at home away from the ones to be worn outside/in the office. You'll do fine then.
Last but not the least, use a good room freshner once the cooking is over and while cleanup the kitchen.
I don't know but these days the main culprit of these smells is also the open-concept living. I somehow despise this concept (while I own a house that has one), and believe the kitchen should always be seperated from the rooms. May be I am old fashioned.
I think its more to do with opening the windows for 15 minutes daily for fresh air to come in during winter season. We dont do it (otherwise heat will escape and power bill will increase and we will catch cold and fall sick and medical bill will increase and ....) so everything stays inside and accumulates and settles on clothes , sofa, shoes and bodies !
All said and done , We south asians have built our strong image of 'spice stinkers' and cannot escape from it. Ratio of stinker vs clean is very high. There is no hope ! Even after taking care of everything, many of us stink spices and onions through our sweat.
candles, scents, curtains, vents etc are only adhoc solutions,
Gradually reducing spices in food and washing (self and clothes in equally high frequency) and not applying that oil in the head are the remedies. Are we on for it ?
I agree with you San-hugo, especially with your first paragraph.
We have become so sensitized that slightly opening a window in the winter months is a big no-no. Wonder how we managed in India all those years.
We really need to change many of our habits in this regard. And oh boy! you're so spot on the strong image of 'spice stinkers'. Although, I don't completely agree with changing the food habits AT ALL and AT ANY COST, we all need to follow some simple and effective hygiene habits.

Prolonged use of Gel is not good for hair longivity
I think the use of vacuum storage bag can be effective solution for jackets and other clothing.
Drinking vinegar(1 teaspoon diluted with a glass of water) at the time of bed is effective for bad breath.
