I am sure many other desis must have experienced before. But why do some desis have most offensive cooking odour emanating from their jackets? . Worse, even the elevator stinks long time after people have left it. Even university students, who are supposed to be very conscious about their self-image, wear a smelly jacket. Is it that people forget to closely shut their closet door before cooking with onion/garlic or whatever other spices they are using?
I am not singling out the desis here as I have experienced obnoxious odours from other jackets too, but we seem to be the main culprit.
I might be oblivious to my smelly jacket, but I make sure that the closet door is tight shut while cooking, and I always make a point to smell the jacket before going out.
Other thing that I have noticed is that we tend not to use aftershave/deodorant/cologne/mint, forgetful that the BO or bad breath can be quite a turn-off for people with strong olfactory senses (like me). Why so much neglect towards personal hygiene?
I know this is not a very tasteful subject to discuss, but I think this issue seem to create a very negative stereotype of South Asians.
Very well said...did you experience this only with jackets? or even with normal clothing?
May be many of them are not aware that jackets also needs cleaning like regular clothes?
1) never cook /be around cooking food right after washing your hair/showering/bathing. The moisture in your hair/skin will absorb the smells. If possible do the cooking before showering/washing hair.
2) Changing clothes before going out after cooking/being around cooking\
3) Invest in a good kitchen hood fan if possible. Most standard ones arent strong enough.

~ Morning rain
Get a good kitchen hood fan.
A deodorant in car.
Scented candles also help getting rid of the smell inside the house.

No trees were killed by this post, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

1.
we recently changed our hood fan from regular to Shakura brand as per cooking needs.......and helps a lot to remove most of smokes during cooking time..
2.
we started using candle when spice or garlic/onion or tadka foods.
3. most effective.....
i installed curtain on my kitchen door it helps a lot...so now when cooking is going on we put curtain down and it helps a lot to transter odour from kitchen to living room area...depends or your layout but mine has only one door entrance to enter in kitchen so we blocked that portion by curtain and it reduced smell to go out from kitchen almost 80% .
