Reality is waiters or people who work in retaurants work below minimum wage like $7.00. I usually tip around 10 to 20 % of my food bill. At saloon I usually tip around $3.00. It all depends on a person to give or not. I personally feel that tip is kind of bonus to provide good service or better service. Again tip should be based on service too..if there isnt good customer serv I dont pay anything..

If you want to do something for our country, just dont support corruption or be part of it
So what I m geting from above is :
a. If you do not tip , you are rememebred and next time you may not be served well . Sounds like an extortion .
b. If they are under paid , why do they accept the job ?? Or is it a tacit understanding b/w their employers and them to fleece the consumer .
c. So if I need to make some one happy , why only the server ( he s got a job anyways ) - why not make some jobless , homeless guy happy ... do charity ?
d. If ppl are paid less and they should be tipped , it does not stop here .. How about the cashiers or front desk people ... Don't they serve us with a smile ?? Guess we should start tipping them as well ...
e. I do not like getting / receiving favors for my job .. it appears a burden to me ... what I do is my duty regardless of the extras ....
The way it is in the restaurants is that you are expected to tip and the custom makes you feel guilty if you do not ...The waiters would eye you , the front desk would or any other person ........... Personally I don't care ... they are being paid for what they do & deserve ............... any other tactic is to extract money out of me / some one else and I feel bad when I succumb to it .
But this discussion is open .. Please continue sharing your views .

I also feel that the wages of these service people are negotitated in such a way so that tips are accpmodated ..If people stop tipping then this component would go .... making the employers ultimately up the wages ...
It sounds more like either the employer is saying ' Go fleece the customer ' OR the server telling the employer 'Don't meddle with how much extra I manage from the customer ' ...
Either ways the attempt is to make the customer pay extra for nothing !!!

Well, if everyone stops tipping, then restaurants will not be able to find workers at present wages. Then they will spend more on wages and when their costs go up and they will pass it on to customers.

Tips are not just kept by the waiter/waitress but split between the wait staff/busser/kitchen staff? It is a custom to tip and it gives the staff an incentive to provide better service. Sort of like commission, however paid by the customer.
I am not arguing for or against tipping, but that it exists.
Like for ex/ In Indian culture, people given shagun (money gifts etc) whenever there is an occasion. Although this isnt required, we do it for social custom. See it the same way. When I go out to eat I expect that Im tipping for the enjoyment of being served at my table.
Other people we customarily tip: taxi driver, hair stylist, esthetician, airport porter etc.

Desis have to be careful when it comes to tipping. Not tipping means you are not just being cheap, but you are being a cheap foreigner.
