A Tip is given by one who just got happy to person who made him happy.
Few prevalent ways to show your happiness over other individual are
- pat on the back or shoulder
- hands on head (ashirvaad)
- public appreciation,
- clapping, standing ovation
- bakhshish in kind,
- coins and money over the heads like in marriages or on kothas and
- in king style taking out your ornament and giving to the performer
and
- in public services by giving tip.
Happy people do these things !
Fido, gets served & eats but do not feel the happiness , thats his self evolved principle. The actual reason anybody will ignore tip part is money !! if not money, then they definitly misunderstand the tip culture, To justify against their mooch-ness, they make a principle which saves them money.
When gratuity culture will superseed tip culture, same people will have new money saver principles. (like percentage is too high, no transparency, I am not sure owner is sharing with the servers , sply one who served me, its not fair, This restaurant is already charging high for the food, food was not good , though service was, huh I can go on ....)
Tip dena dilwalon kaa kaam hai ! baki log naa deney kaa reason dhoondtey hain !
I have seen people in the restaurant who give tip to the server before anything served. This will guarantee that server will do his job with extra care.
TIP IS NOT FOR KANJOOS PEOPLE.
RajC ,
You are assuming that the business operates on break even plus .... No that does not happen .... So if some one is not selling you at a loss does not mean that he is not making any profits either .... it is possible that by increasing gratuity the place may lose business or may be forced to close down ...... or may not absorb the extra cost .... Either way things will level them selves out better .
To the others .... I have maintained - increase the taxes , increase the gratuity or increase the prices .... all is agreeable and understandable .... That will at least exhibit the actual cost and possibly trigger a price war ..... Pricing is a very tender component of business .
But DO NOT expect anything extra which is unaccounted for not doing anything extra .. its your job ..... Even if it has to be incentives that should be a matter b/w the employer and employee ....
Sir - you are most entitled to your happiness as much as I am to mine .... And don't forget to make at least 2 people happy every day by giving them $100/- .. They will be very happy and so will you be !!!!

So that means that the incentive may be absorbed by the business even if it means lesser profits .... even if they decide to increase the prices at least they would be correctly exhibited ... Prices makes a lot of change to the business especially in a competitive market .

Fido.
A lot of companies and even countries are in need of magic formula that can explain how one business keeps running at break even minus. I thought you are going to enlighten on that.
