There were predictions of showers on some of the met websites, but it seemed that the Rain Gods had also joined hands with the Indians living in Toronto who came out to support the India Against Corruption movement and the Jan Lokpal Bill.
On a lovely Saturday afternoon, the crowds started to assmeble from 11.30 am at the Indian Consulate. The agenda of the protest was to condemn the unconstitutional arrest of Annaji and his team on 16th August, to extend our support to the Jan Lokpal Bill and to apread awareness about the differences in drafts tabled by the government and Team Anna. There were spontaneous slogans being shouted in support of the Jan Lokpal Bill.
The petition was read out in public and was supported unanimously by every soul present at the event. Then started the signature campaign which would be sent to the Consulate General and to be forwarded to the Prime Minister. Also an awareness campaign was undertaken with sources of nformation being shared for helping everyone understand the two drafts better
The overwhelming support to the movement was evident with the fact that nearly 300 signatures were taken. The chants became louder and could be heard from two blocks away. Several locals also showed their support by honking their horns.
One could see the cross-section of the Indian society present at the event, with people from all regions, languages and religions uniting under the National Flag. The event was covered by the local media and a report will be run on it in the Toronto Sun tomorrow, Monday August 22nd 2011.
At around 1.45 pm the National Anthem was sung by a 300 strong crowd and the event ended. The city of Toronto, which had witnessed unrest during the G20 summit last year, saw first hand the power of non-violence.
