Dears;

With thanks, some clarification plz.
I have no intention of getting my citizenship changed. I will stay in India only for this job duration(about 2 years). As OCI/ PIO needs more time to apply, so I will go with work visa. Will that allow me to get driving license in India; any other point related to living there for the period of job?

Check the TAX implications of yoru earnings. I think on work permit u do not have to pay any tax india if one work permit.

You can apply for OCI once u go to india.

I think PIO timeline is 2-3 weeks.. u should look into getting that rather than apply for WP.

If u have ur old drivers license u should continue to use it.

Mind u now any visa for india will need a surrender certificate which will add another week to the whole process

Did they ever clear up the confusion on the surrender certs? I believe, at one time, surrender cert was not required for anyone who acquired non-Indian citizenship before a certain timi in 2010? Or is it the fee of $250 or so was not required but certificate was still needed?

In India, if you look like an Indian, then you are eligible for any benefits of an Indian.
Technically you are not eligible for ration card and Govt. Gas connection if you are a Cdn. citizen.
DL you will be able to get.
All they require is an affidavit, if you donot have proof of local address. In that you will have to swear that " I am an Indian citizen".
My collegue from Gujarat went home one day and the next day he brought a chip embedded DL from there after paying a bribe. In any southern states you will not get a DL unless you follow rules.
Get a IDP (international) from CAA for $ 15. It is valid for one year. By that time get your new DL after following the rules of India / bribe as per the state you will be in.
It is BS that you will not need to pay taxes on a WP. You will need to pay 2 taxes. One to the Indian govt. at around 25% of your salary (if your salary is more than 1 lakh per month). Some tax may then have to be paid to Canada.
No company can pay you unless you have a PAN card and that PAN card is endorsed with the tax office of your company (Endorsing will be done by your office. PAN card will have to be got by you. You can start the process now. If you do it in Canada, you will pay a premium price. If you start the process after coming to India as I did you pay Rs 100. I got my first month salary a few days late due to this).
Hope this helps.
Peace to all and every one, even to Canadians

I worked in Indis for 2 years OCI card. I applied for PAN card but tax officer do not give PAN card to OCI becasue have not received from the government on OCI but they do issue PAN card easily to PIO. Fuuny.

I joind company giving PAN card resuest number and HR did not give any problem. And got my PAN card (not sure how) I think due to agency my company hired for expat help(like driving license, driver, bill payment, finding apartment, car registration in other word wherever you have to bribe depending on work agency charged me from Rs 100 to Rs 1200). I think it was reasonable going to government office, driving, food, fuel, efforts and time a person waste. Agency people know where to go and already have fxied rate.

As some one mentioned if you look like indian and you & your children have not have north american accent you are indian in india. Does Indain government know how many illegals in India.

I think if you are getting very good salary I dounbt you would like to move back to canada. As I know family friend who moved back to India and now working at higher position of india operation of a multinational. He is getting good salary and has better future. Here in canada you will add little and limited growth

AFAIK Surrender cert is mandatory for all otherwise u get no service from indian consulate
Only difference is fees is $40 for anyone who got citizenship before surrender cert was introduced in 2010.If after 2013 u still haven;t applied for surrender cert, then u have to pay penalty which will be make u pay close to $200 which is close to their normal fees.
