You still havent voiced your opinion abt the "Common Civil code".. My take is as follows :-
1.) India, like any western democracy, should have a common civil code. However, there should be explicit delimitations for personal religious beliefs. In essence it should be something like what the USA has (vis-a-vis religious symbols etc., yet not having an Islamic civil code, a Christian civil code, Hindu civil code etc. )..and not like France (forced assimilation).

2.) Well do not tell me abt stuff here in the west.. Women, discrimination based on ur color etc.. So I do not mind what the western media has to write about India and its customs !

3.) I have another question here. While you stated that the Quran indicates co-existence between religions, my friend who is a Sunni, states otherwise. His take is as follows :-
"Non muslims can remain as non muslims but EVERY effort must be made to change their mind to convert to ISLAM...If not peacefully, through coercion and as a last resort force !".. Is this true ? He says that this is the duty of every faith-abiding Muslim.. What is u'r take on it ? Afterall, I am a "Hindu-Kutta" (for Pakistani's especially) and a "Kaafir" for all Muslims !

4.) You stated discrimination meted out to you by Hindus. Have you faced any discrimination within Islam ?
Shia-Sunni, everyone vs Ahmedaiya, everyone was Qaidani etc.
So putting it in a usual dialogue ...

5.) Finally, a big issue raised by the BJP and folks back home. Unchecked population growth amongst Muslims. My friend states that there is no concept of family planning in the Quran. Abstinenance from Sex (as jake3d puts it) should be voluntary. But Human nature being as it is, this is not a workable solution. Take the example of Malaysia. A Muslim country, progressive in a true sense and yet they encourage family planning. Why is it that Indian Muslims (common folks and not selected individuals).. get all riled up ( and yeah my friend also got worked up) when the concept of family planning comes up. Your thoughts on this.

Let me address the issue of population growth first.

Qur'an says: All life is from Lord (or God or Allah or Bhagvan or Ishwar or Parmeshwar - all the same whatever you call Him) and its created for a purpose on this earth.

My question to you is: Since 100% of Saudis are Muslims, why isn't Saudi Arabia having the biggest population in the world - if I follow your logic? I agree with the previous post that Muslims for long long time have made up only 20% of Indian masses - I am sure this %age hasn't increased in last 50 years.

Let me also tell you that Islam is the fastest growing religion in North America not due to birth rates but because of conversions? Do you know that after Sep 11 the rate of conversion to Islam has increased dramatically in North America? (source: Guinness Book of World Records 2004)

Let me clarify, I consider myself "muslim" as prescribed in Qur'an - I am not shia/sunni/ismaili/bora or anything else.

Please read again the definition of Jihad: “if fighting evil and injustice leads to more evil and greater injustice then it is not jihad”. I am not looking through British or Indian or Pakistani perspective – I am looking through God’s perspective as defined in Qur’an. I don’t know what you mean by “Jihad-e-Akbar” – I have never heard this term before.

I am a Muslim – I am not wahabi or anything else. I do not claim to be distinguished – I follow the Holy Qur’an as it was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him).

(1) Frankly speaking I have not idea about the “civil code" you are talking about. I have nothing to offer you on this issue.

(2) Yes, racism exists everywhere (east and west). Does that mean it is acceptable?

(3) Please ask your friend to comment on this verse from Holy Qur’an “Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things (2:256)” Does your friend know how Prophet Mohammed lived in Makkah and Medinah. He never forced anyone to accept Islam. His mandate from Allah was to convey the message (did you notice he is called “a messenger”) to those who would listen.

(4) Yes, I have faced discrimination by “Muslims” as well. See (2) above.

(5) Please read my last post regarding population growth. Don’t you agree that all life is created by Bhagwan? In Qur’an, Lord says that He gives life and sustenance to every living being. Have you ever wondered how that tree in the middle of the Amazon Forest grows without going anywhere from its place?

2.) Well the quote you presented does not clearly explain my point. You state that no violence was used in converting ppl.. I am sure historical accounts will state otherwise. Wasnt there an incident mentioned in the Quran where the armies of the prophet converted ppl by force ? I am talking abt the Jews who refused to believe in him & ppl who spread Islam by force all through the centuries. (Something like crusaders in Christianity)

3.) Jihad-e-Akbar is a term i read in Pakistani newspapers.. " a Jihad against Hunger, poverty etc.".. I would however like yor opinion from an Islamic perspective. Subhas Bose believed in Violence to achieve independence. So in your opinion he was a Jihadi... so how does that differentiate the Terrorists from across the border, who claim that they are doing a JIHAD ? Your last answer was kinda evasive in nature.. Pls help me with a concrete reply

4.) Well to be honest I do not believe in abortion unless it affects the life of a mother. As for planned parenthood, I am all for it. ("Na rahegi baans na bajegi baansuri" This is because humans are the worst creatures on this earth.. "Har raat suhaag raat" is the norm for Humans (unlike animals and Trees that you have mentioned that have a mating / pollinating season).. Do you think that unchecked family growth ("Junub-e-abaadi" is required in this time ? Do you think that Muslims ('cos of their religious beliefs" should not be using it as a PROP (aka Nicotine patch to quit smoking) to control the population growth.

5.) Uniform Civil code = no separate laws for Muslims, Hindus, Christians etc. e.g. Sharia, Hindu Family act, etc. ..i.e equal rights to property, inheritance, marriage, dovorce etc . Thats what I mean by civil code ..
