Hey guys!
I'm a first generation Canadian travelling to India by myself for the first time. I'm planning on arriving at Dehli then taking a domestic flight to Chandighar.

I'm slightly worried because I'm 19 year old female who doesn't speak good punjabi/hindi. My friend went to India the same route last week and she got harrassed at the airport by costumes for no reason.
I don't want to go through the same thing so I was wondering if any one had tips about avoiding that?

Is there a way I can get an airport employee to take me from International to domestic flights?

any help would be apprecaited

Hi,
Please do not worry. I travel to India every 6 months or so. Airport staff at Delhi are very good. No Need to speak any Punjabi/Hindi. If you are not bringing any restricted item, custom is very friendly. You can walk thry Green Channel. Most of the Domestic flight leaves from same terminal ( T3). No need to hire anybody. You will find it very easy. You have to come out of International arrival & go up again for domestic departure( I assume you are using Air India/Jet ) for Domestic flight. Enjoy your flight.

When you are checking in your bags at Toronto airport, make sure they check in your bags till Chandigarh, not till Delhi.Last time when I travelled, I had tickets Toronto-Delhi and Del-Chd on separate documents, the agent at airport told me that he cannot check my bag till chd but all I have to do is identify my bags in Delhi and there will be Jet airways counter which will accept the bags. But I had problems.Domestic terminal is on higher floor. When I went upstairs with 2 little kids and 6 bags, I was told I cannot go inside as my flight is next morning and counter is not opened yet.

Whereas on the way back on same tickets agent at Chandigarh airport was able to check in my bags till Toronto. So it was a smooth travel.

So make sure and have a good flight!

Even if bags are checked (on paper) till the final destination, one will always have to claim the bags at the first port of entry where immigration and customs inspections are done, and then re-checked within the domestic sector. That is why you experienced the above.

Since flights tend to arrive late night into India, there is this inconvenience of waiting for the counters to open up. Other than that, it's mostly smooth sailing.
