The new Mayor of Bangalore, a woman and a dalit, has studied upto 10th standard, not sure if she passed. Looks like education has no value. She is a corporator from rural Bangalore. She won from a reserved ward (constituency) for woman and scheduled caste. She was a housewife before becaming a corporator. Her husband is a BJP “worker”. Her only claim? Being a woman and a dalit. Her deputy, has a degree at least. There are number of corporators who have not crossed 10th standard.

The outgoing deputy mayor has a masters degree. He was 27 when elected. He was dynamic and enthusiastic. He started really well, but within two months, he was made to shut up and shunted out of the process. He was deputy mayor for namesake. That’s how the system works I guess.

Nothing against the new lady mayor. But Bangalore, a cosmopolitan city with nearly a crore population with number of foreign firms operating and an IT hub, deserves better. This is the messed up system where the majority party selects the mayor against the wishes of the party corporators and the people. People can take a hike. Looks like this lady is just a front for netas to loot as she won’t understand the job (much like Rabid Devi in Bihar). The minister in charge of Bangalore selected her. Highly educated IAS officers have to bow to her wishes, I mean the wishes of the netas who will make her speak for their own selfish/corrupt deeds.

Why cant we have a system where people elect a mayor directly? Let there be candidates from the different political parties for the post of the mayor and deputy mayor. At the same time people can also vote for the corporators. At least people will chose the mayor they want, not by some political compulsions or corrupt system.

I do not understand the rant here. Are you a racist or Islamist who do not want to see a Dalit lady in position of power? What did a doctor like MMS gave to country? Corruption. Moron has handed over India to China on platter.

Believe me, she might prove to be much better than 10th fail Sonia who rules the country.

Both Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Akbar had no formal education. They were great rulers.
Having a university degree cannot make anyone politically wise person.

What powers does the mayor in Indian Cities have?
All they can do is look into city administration - all other decisions are made at state level.

There actually should not be any mayor in indian cities since the Municipal commissioner is already doing the same job - but who can stop the NETAs..
