No .. Van burbs are not costlier than Toronto burbs (maybe just a little). It is a good package either on Toronto or Vancouver and for a family of 2???? Sure Yeah!!! (at least for me).

100k is a very good package - no denying of it. Doesn't it all boil down to one's lifestyle?

Oh boy! You have no idea - Vancouver suburbs are more costlier than Toronto's. Trust me as I am living in the one. Average 2 story detached house price in Vancouver is about a million dollar, and the same is true for the immediate neighboring suburbs, such as Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, White Rock, South Surrey. In Toronto burbs, at least you can buy a semi-detached and rent out the basement, but here semi-detached in a decent neighborhood about 35 kms from Downtown cost as much as $500,000.

To the OP. Go for the offer. I am in IT as well, and 100k is the dream in Canadian market - at least in these times. Vancouver has a the mildest climate in the country. It's currently 10 degrees outside my window, when the entire Canada is in negatives. Lifestyle is better, you can skii and golf the same day (heard, but never tried :)).

Good luck and enjoy your time here.

febreet as you can see from my other post I constantly think about moving to a place with better weather .. like california /bay area is on my mind, but maybe vancouver is an easier option.

I keep hearing Vancouver weather is better but constantly raining meaning you cant do much outdoors
IT jobs are very limited there
and as you mentioned .. extreme cost for housing.

Canadian Dream

Like the American Dream, except you follow your dreams and still help a brother out. And you don't exploit people.

In a nutshell, 100K is very good package. Also, depands upon your expanses.

Have you ever heard a Canadian dream like American dream. Canada is not a country where you can become a millionaire.

I get 102K and I live in the province with highest tax rate in Canada. After paying taxes, mortgage for a 4 bed room house , utilities, car, three phone lines, internet, cable, land lines etc.. and eating out once a week, I am able to save 30K per year. I am not in IT, we are 4 members in family.

I think it is a very good package considering the current economic conditions in Canada. People are not able to get even half of this...

I'm offered a salary of 100K + 15% Annual bonus + $800 for medical.
Is this how normal package is like for person with 9+ year of experience looks like, am I getting raw deal, please suggest.
Besides, any rough estimate what is monthly expenses a family of 2 incur, leading a simple life (which involves 4-5 times eating out a week).

I appreciate if you can give me some insight, will really help to reach a decisions, thanks a lot!!!

Regards,
Raj

100k package is okay but $800 mediacal seems dodgy. I am getting same package but also have full medical ,dental coverage for me & my family. If u r coming from CA. For alone person. 100k may be okay but for small kids and family. It is bare min. Espacially if u get in buying new 4 bed detach house etc..
May u just get into job then look further where medical facility is better in job. If u have small kids then beleive me medicines /dental etc cost quite a lot.
In this case I find UK was great. All dental and medical facility was free for all residents.

Hi All,
Thanks for much needed insight. More information about me, I'm currently working in singapore in ERP domain, doing the consulting + project managment.
I draw a package equivalent of CAD 65K/ year here in SG, and able to save around 27-30K per.

I did some research on other sites as well like payscale and avg. salary comes out around same 80-95K range and reading the responses here, I have feeling that salary looks OK as well.
what I want to know is , what's monthly expenses normally looks like, can i expect to save arnd 3K/ month, living a normal life, sure that means no Ferrari no hign end vehicle, just a basic car with 1-2 bedroom house (apartment) and eating out 3-4 times a MONTH?
How much one normally should set aside for the rent, is $1200 is enough? , which is the recommended area to live, sure I'm not expecting to live in downtown area. And would prefer to use the public transport for few starting months (atleast 6).
For the tax, I read that it's about 39% in VANC is that real, or we can have some tax deductions by means of home loans or anything else, please suggest.

For medical package, $800 is to cover physical fitness / gym only besides I'll be covered by the group health and dental coverage.
Does offer has to be specific in terms $$ of health and dental converage is it?

Once again thank you all for your valuable suggestions....

~Raj
