5k for a single person? We spend less than that for a family of 3 and still have a good life !!!!

True !!
But probably, you don't eat out (I mean some fine italian restaurants, can bill you $200 & still you come home & have roti/saag) & pub night life, where girls can drive u crazy.

Actually, we do eat out..... quite a bit.... at places where they give enough food to fill your stomach (not the fine dining, cute looking, bite size food restaurants). My wife drives me crazy enough to know not to go looking for more craziness from girls :)

Anyway, if you are ever this way, try Michigan Diner in Tecumseh, ON. Good food, good service, decent priced (can get out with a $30 tab for 2.5 people), might feel out of place as most are 50+ customers (unless you are 50+).

correct. Nightlife needs to be factored in for a single person.

Dear Senior CD’s,

My query is still not answered. Request all of you provide your inputs on my query raised in reply to “Vandamatram’s” excellent response. As per him for single person on sharing basis following are the monthly estimates (approx) in Toronto.

.Accomodation: sharing a basement and hence will cost about $350 pm.

2.Telephone: Cell: $ 30 pm; India: $20pm on calling cards:$ 50 pm.

3.Food:$350 pm(Non-Veg included).

4.Bus Pass: $100 pm.

5.Incidentals: $ 150 pm which includes clothing, soap, toothpaste and related toiletries and other incidentals.

6.If you would like to enjoy the night life, recreation, week end trips add another $250pm conservatively.

budget at around $1500 per month safely.

I would be thankful to all of you if you

“Please suggest if I don't choose basement apartment and how much cost will get added to that. Also, If I only work 40 hours a week for on hourly paid job till the time I get a permanent job, will I be able to manage these expenses?

Yes, I would like to spend some money for recreation like eating out, pubs, movies etc. Also if you can also add expenses on internet.

Thanks in advance.”

Let is assume you do a labour job. The harder the job the easier to do.
Tim Horton $ 10.25 an hour
Heavy lifting $ 12 an hour to start with

40 hours * 12 *4 = $1920. you may get $ 1500 in hand.

Bring your wife and children. If you bring your wife and 2 children below 6 years of age , you will get this FREE, FREE , FREE from the Govt. of Canada.

CCTB - $ 726 per month abosolutely free
HST Credit - $ 175 a month, absolutely free
UCCB- $ 200 a month , abosolutely free.
besides they will be eligible for more ontario FREE money (like national child benefit for low income families)

so it makes sense to come to Canada with as many wifes , as many children under the age of 16 as possible. This country blesses them only and not single people coming to slog it out.

Beside you ger FREE the following :
free food from the food bank
free schooling
free daycare (subject to a waiting line adherence policy)
free english speaking classes (and free TTC passes to sttend it)
free doctor consultation and emergency room admission
free clean air etc...

Peace

Thanks for your reply.

All I am planning is to first come by my own for few months, have a look at the country, opportunities etc. and If I am satisfied with everything then only I pack everything in India and call my wife and 2 years old kid. My wife is also like to work and not sit at home.

So, All I want to understand from you all senior CD’s is that will I be able to survive in this country for few months till I get a decent job or I explore this country for say 4-5 months before I make my final decision to move my family here. Why I am enquiring only about 40 hours a week because that is the maximum I will be able to work in initial few months because I need good time to search for a job. I am okey with shared accommodation to start with. But yes I need basic facilities also to live decent life for these months.

It is a good idea that you come for a few months and see the situation. Remember that even survival jobs are hard to find these days. If you have a good job in India do not leave your job. The expense estimate given by Vandematram is fair.

Hi Delhi Indian,

Here is my breakup when I was single lived n both Toronto and Vancouver. I believe is all upto you as to how much money you want to spend. There's no end to it. May be I lived more frugally and was able to save a considerable amunt in two years by working in just call centres for about 11 or 11 dollars an hour. But that period laid the foundation. Anyhow it's not about me so here it goes:

1. A decent one bed basement : $450 per month(I was lucky to get this cheap - that too near Heartland, Mississauga)
2. Travel: $70 to $80
3. Phones including long distance: $70
4. Eating out occassionally: 70 to 80 (max as I love cooking so most of the time cooked at home)
5. Grocery: about $80
6. Internet: $20 (wireless shared with landlord)

So the max I used to spend was $800 per month. No pub'ing for me and lived very conservatively. If you buy a car then add about $300 more. But if you are new then i would recommend you to ply on public transit. It is pretty good there in Toronto.

So again, its all upto you as to how much expenses you want to incur each month based upon your finances and earnings.

By the way I am also from Delhi.
