We have valid PR status and planning to return to Canada (Ontario) during next summer for a retired life there (53 years and 49 years).

Since both of us regularly take medicines which are required for life long for diabetics(insulin injections), Blood Pressure, statins and also epilepsy medicines for one of us, we would like to know more details for getting these medicines in Ontario.

1. Since we may be taking up only part-time jobs, if required during summer to keep us occupied, we will not be covered by any insurance through our employers.

2. Are there any private insurance companies which will cover the above medicines.

3. Are there any government schemes which will cover the above medicines at a nominal cost.

4. If we purchase the above medicines locally from the pharmacy, what is the cost of these medicines/injection etc.

I would really appreciate the feedback from fellow desis who are currently taking such medicines, what is the best solution.
(ofcourse one solution is to bring lots of medicines from India every year)

As per your age and preexisting conditions insurance companies will charge very high apxt.$300 per month

Yes but then there is a deductible up to 4% of your annual income. i.e. if your family income is 25K you have to pay up to $1000 and above it they will pay.

Pharmacy store will charge about $10-$12 to read the prescription. On top of it you have to pay for the medicine. If you have a membership of costco they will charge you very less(apxt. 5 dollars per prescription).I dont have exact idea about price of the medcine you mentioned but I heard that they are reasonably high.

Yes this is the cheapest solution. Yes but it is difficult as prescription medicines are not allowed in courier so better you spend money here for life savings drugs though it is costly.

Hi,
I take few of these medicine . They will cost you something like 500 CAD/month. Better to bring from India. You bring in Persons for 3 months or so. Very expensive here without insurence.

Thank you for your email. I have sent you a PM.

I would appreciate more views from desis who are in similar situation, as to what is the best option.

I understand Ontario PRs are covered by the OHIP and senior citizens are covered by Free Drug plans and also they have Trillium Drug Plan.

Any comments on this.
