Hi!

I am a Graduate Civil Engineer with 16 years of project and engineering experience in India with a big company. Can anybody guide me on the job opportunities for Civil Engineers in Toronto at present.

I would also be greatful if someone can tell me how PEO rates an Indian Civil Engineering degree from reputed Indian Universities for granting P Eng. Do I have to appear in any technical exam?

My PR application is currently under process.

Generally, the prospects for any new immigrant in any field is more for persons having less than 7 years experience than the ones having more.

Anyone having more than 15 years experience - prospects generally are bleak - not only in Canada, but even in India!

The more experience and seniority you bring with you to Canada, the more frustations and hardships you have to face.

Civil Engineers from South East Asia are having very hard time in Canada, bu exceptions are always there. If you are from India to get Professional License you will have to write technical exam ( it is like redo the degree because for them your Indian degree is good for nothing) and even after that there is no guarantee of getting job in your own field.

2 examples :
one of my friend who was having only 2 years of experience in the field of Civil Engineering Almost fresh graduate from India), got his P.Eng after 3 years and now he is unemployed since last 14 months.

Another friend having almost 15 years experience, graduated from Pakistan. He did try for P.Eng… and given up after 2 years. Presently he is working in his own field and quite satisfied with his position. Although it took almost 6 years to get to this point.

Now you decide by yourself what is good for you!

Thanks and regards.

Being in this industry i can safely say that construction industry is booming in Canada these days . I am only one month old in canada but what i am seeing is astonishing ....all major builders in toronto market are stretched to their maximum for manpower .... last week i learned about a builder declining to bid on a project because they have no manpower to do it !!

in fact there is an unprecedented rise in copper and steel prices in the market because of booming construction projects industry .

this boom is also because of the prevailing low interest rates , major corporations have taken advantage and launched major capital improvement projects .

How does that translate for a civil engineer ? ....this is the best time to get in if you are in construction .... now individual cases may be different depending on the type of expertise they have but if a civil engineer wants to enter the market ...this is the right time .

Good luck.

Thank you all for your sincere advice. Mishtar India .. you are really very positive, thanks a lot. This forum is really helpful and you guys are really great!

That brings me the thinking that how many people really have the guts to leave their home land to search better opportunites. The fact that all of you have already done it....means you guys have guts. With due respect to all the real facts about the plight of new immigrants, I must say there is a cost for everything and no gain without pain. I understand, everybody there has started from nowhere. There was no short cuts.

One of my friend is in Materials Management with Engineering background. He is very excited about moving to Canada. Would you advise him to pursue Carreer in Materials or Engineering. How is Supply-Chain industry doing there? Many feedbacks from members of this forum suggests that Engineers have tough time in getting jobs.

It is hard to say anything about materials engineering.... most engineers end up in a related but different feild here ...the market is very wide.

the skills which one should very good at irrespective of professon is ..
personality, presentation, communication and confidence levels

if one has the above 4 it becomes easier to get into new feilds.
