Hi CD s ,

How does it sound if a new employee asks for a 2 mos leave after being in only for 3-4 months ?

Dilemma is .. I am talking with an Organization for a job prospect ... And I have plans to visit India for around 2 months in Nov - Dec .... So ...

a. Either I join the job ( if I get it ) .... and then after completing 3 mos ask for a leave citing what ever reasons ... Paid / Unpaid does not matter ...

OR .

b. I compromise my chances of even getting in , by blurting this out in the discussions / interview and letting them know in advance .. Wonder how they will take it ......

Which way would you advice ???

Option 3 : During your negotiations, can you request joining date Jan 2011 - due to current commitments? Some organisations see it a positive sign of responsible departure from current job.

It is indeed a tough choice, but if your qualifications are matching and your are good candidate for the company - most of the times they are flexible.

BTW, 2 months vacation even with a confirmed job of 6 years is too much to ask - unless you have a very accommodating supervisor.

Good luck.

Hiren

Two months might be too much. However, if you get an offer, while negotiating the offer, I don't see a problem asking the employer if they would consider "upto 2 months". The worst they can say is no or you might actually get something in between paid or unpaid. During Nov/Dec, you might be able to combine year end holidays plus vacation.

Even if they say and after joining, you could bring it up with your supervisor at that time. Who knows supervisors and HR might have different views.

Thanks Hiren & Dimple2001 ....

Option 'C' may not be an option since I don't feel that would wish to wait that long ... This option had not crossed my mind I must admit ...

Q is whether to tell them before / during the talks OR later upon joining and completing probation period ?

Generally speaking , can they fire you after completing probation , on grounds of taking leave for exigent circumstances ?

I would tell them before hand - just to set the expectations correct. If you are really worried - Don't make it sound too rigid on your side that it turns out to be a deal breaker for employer. Feel the water n see how they take it.

Personally, I like it to be upfront. In past, I have asked manager to wait till weekend, as I was waiting on one another offer. I told him the complete story. I could ask only weekend because he wanted me to start next day. At the same time, he did tell me that he will line up the resource. I hope I have not burn the bridge but I was honest with him :)

Let's say ...
You ask employer to wait for 2 months ... they agree for it. Employer is all excited to have you, working in background preparing your arrival.
While you are in India working - starting to get used to the life n work. You find work interesting and decide to stay back.
What will you tell guys here? "Oooppsss ... too bad, but sorry I am not joining ... you were stupid to wait for me ????

All the best ...

Option D: Work online?

I have seen some US IT employers allow travel to India, subject to the condition that the employee continue to work online from there. Work hours, while flexible, were calibrated for EST or whichever timezone the employer's office was located at. Employees still had to attend staff/group meetings via videoconferencing. So its not really a "vacation".

This does not work here as this is not a US employer ....
