Traffice congestions are everywhere and I believe is a global phenomena in big cities. The only way you can get rid of it is if you take public transport and live near your workplace. Both of these scenario are based upon various other factors.

yeah and most "big cities" actually build infrastructure around the growing poplulation to counter this traffic congestion. Buffalo, NY has 3 interstae highways looping around the city, not to mention multiple state highways. What does Moronto have? A single national highway, a "complimentary" loop highway that costs an arm & a leg to use and 3 other "supplementary" highways that connect to 401 at sparodic spots?

Heck even Delhi & Bombay have built word class highways and flyovers to make the traffic fast flowing. Our traffic lights have cameras a plenty (for giving tickets - :D ) but no sensors or synchronization to create the "green traffic zones" other countries have adapted years ago.

The traffic system in GTA is a sad joke

my favourite topic. road bashing. :) i have used 401 for the last four years. it has gone from bad to worse in that time. many of my colleagues who use 401 daily see that the traffic has gone up exponentially in the last 4 months. it a pain crossing 401 and even bigger pain is the QEW. in the last 5 years can you name one major road or public transport set up in gta. 407 is one of the most expensive options. which world class city would have a major highway cutting through the city with no loop highway. no wonder it is the busiest highway - there is no alternative.

stop the flow of trucks during peak times. that should solve the problem to some extent.

i do not know about delhi, however, for mumbai that is an overstatement. traffic in mumbai is horrible. all these flyovers over the western express highway and to some extent the eastern express highway have not helped. traffic jams are horrible. south bombay is congested. one hour to cross 10 km is very common and people have resigned to that. i think everyone is busy making money to worry about that.

I agree IceBerg. The idiot Canadian Gov. has over $1 billion to pay for "security" at the G2 summit but not enough money to pay a decent highway system in the "financial capital" of the country. I hope all the people coming for the summit get trapped in traffic on the 401 for an hour or two. :D

There is nothing like US interstate in Canada. The closest to US interstate we have is Trans-Canadian highway but that doesn't even touch Toronto.

Strictly speaking, even Transcanada cannot be compared to US interstate because it is still a two lane undivided highway in certain sections (imagine a national highway without a road divider!)

401 is only a east-west highway. It was originally designed as a Toronto bypass highway about 60 years back. But with the growth of suburbs it now cuts right through the middle of GTA

If you are frustrated with traffic jams in 401 highway, wait till they take down Gardiner expressway . Things will get far worse.

There were proposals to build a new GTA bypass parallel to 401 but towards north of it (possibly through New Market area) but I think those proposals are being stalled due to environmental concerns.

Only a GTA bypass parallel to highway 401 will solve the traffic problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I think we are getting off track here by concentrating mostly on the infrastructural issues.

I would request your feedback on other aspects as well - quality of life, cost of living, pollution, air connectivity (I'm sure it'd be much better than Calgary), social life, religious institutions, security etc..

Thanks again.

As long as the 407 exists, there will be no more highways in the GTA. The scam runs from top to bottom in this country and the Govt. is hand in glove with the business when it comes to cheating Joe Citizen.

But who cares, we have those $300 GST checks in the mail right?

:p
