Editorial: Police face scrutiny
Toronto's controversy-wracked police force is enduring yet another blow to its reputation with the leader of the police union stepping aside pending the outcome of an official probe, and the suspension of an officer who is the son of a former chief.
Yet Toronto police Chief Julian Fantino insists citizens are still confident about their officers. Perhaps he's right. But public confidence surely is not as high as it was at the start of this year. How could it be?
The latest allegations of police corruption are only a new link in a recent chain of shocking disclosures.
Six drug squad officers were arrested in January and charged with a string of offences, including theft, extortion and assault.
The rot didn't stop there. Four officers were named "unindicted co-conspirators." Investigators running the probe complained of an even wider circle of officers who were hostile and unco-operative.
Next, in a clear blow to civilian oversight of the force, a confidential police memo was leaked to the media in an effort to discredit Alan Heisey, the new reform-minded head of the police services board.
Now, internal affairs officers are probing allegations of bribery, sex-for-favours deals with transvestites, and a "protection racket" involving entertainment district bars.
No charges have been laid. But Const. Bill McCormack Jr., a 52 Division plainclothes officer, has been suspended. And the division's entire plainclothes unit has been scattered.
Toronto Police Association president Rick McIntosh, a former member of that unit, has stepped down as union leader until the investigation is complete. He maintains he has done nothing wrong.
When will this chain of scandals end? Residents are wondering what is going on with their police force.
Fantino's repeated claims that only a few "bad apples" are at fault get weaker with every new revelation.

I think we need to send some 'pandu hawaldars' from Mumbai to show the Toronto police how to bake their cake and eat it too
I was watching the movie "Aab tak chappan" the other day on T.V. And I'm told this is based on real stuff.
Well, if reality is even remotely close to what I saw, I'd rather be pulled over by a mountie anytime.
I'm not condoning corruption amongst cops here, but let's not forget that what's news here is a way of life in our countries.
Cops are after all human beings, they don't have wings. And just like there's bad elements amongst the general population, there inevitably will be some in the police dept. as well. As long as they're caught and punished, I'm ok.

Well, the police in so called third world countries is not well paid and over worked becase all countries are heavily populated whereas our police is very well paid and not over worked ( though Toronto Police claim they are over worked too... and that overwork is 2 homicide cases per Officer per year )
But the bottom line is corruption can not be justified in any form.
Thanks and regards.
